Chapter 895 - 894: The Director Invites
Chapter 895 - 894: The Director Invites
Time passed bit by bit. Chu Ge kept an eye on everyone's movements and expressions in the cell, patiently waiting. He planned to use some means on Li Zheming when the night fell silent.Actually, according to Chu Ge's plan, he preferred to come in directly at midnight. However, since he was relying on Lin Gaoze for help, Lin Gaoze needed to leverage his own connections, and some things were inevitably inconvenient.
Therefore, it wasn't just a matter of wanting this or that, bringing Chu Ge in at this time close to nighttime was already quite impressive.
Without a phone or watch, and unable to see the outside sky, Chu Ge could only roughly estimate the time. Just when he thought it was about nine o'clock, footsteps sounded from outside, likely the night shift guard checking on the cells.
The footsteps approached from afar, and as they neared this cell, Chu Ge's focus intensified, his gaze chilled, and he slowly scanned the inside of the cell, the warning unmistakable.
Thud thud thud...
When the footsteps reached the door of the cell, Chu Ge's attention hit its peak, firmly locked onto the unconscious Li Zheming and the person he had knocked out earlier, but who now was awake, his eyes showing some defiance. Chu Ge's gaze grew even colder.
Noticing Chu Ge's cold demeanor, the expression of some changed. A few eyes swept over with hesitation, and after a few seconds, they looked away, either at the ceiling or lowered their heads.
They had been beaten by Chu Ge, feeling displeased, but to be honest, anyone who ended up in a place like this had been beaten at some point. Even the previous "head bed" Li Zheming had a bit of color on him.
Except for this newcomer, whose skills were ridiculously strong, almost like a freak.
Even if they barked now, called the guards, and reported Chu Ge's fight, as long as Chu Ge didn't leave the cell, they would ultimately suffer. The guards couldn't protect them non-stop 24 hours a day, right?
Thud thud thud...
The footsteps outside didn't pause, continuing onward. Those who intended to bark had a mixture of regret and relief, their feelings immensely complex.
Chu Ge looked at Li Zheming beside him; the guy had his eyes closed, showing no signs of waking up.
Everything was going smoothly. In just a few hours, he could have a good chat with Li Zheming. He was confident that with his few dishes, even if Li Zheming had an iron mouth, he could break it open.
Just then, an extremely abrupt ringing of a phone echoed, the footsteps outside stilled, and the ringing stopped abruptly.
"Yes, yes, I understand."
After a few short sentences, the footsteps resumed outside, and... it was coming back, continuously approaching the door of this cell.
Chu Ge frowned slightly. What was happening? The guard's target couldn't be this cell, could it?
The saying "fear of what comes" kicked in, and the footsteps indeed stopped right in front of this cell's door. Immediately after, the sound of keys unlocking the door rang again.
Upon hearing this sound, Chu Ge's mouth twitched, his heart speechless. Did he have to be such a jinx?
"Oh well, since the guard has come, there's no point in thinking elsewhere. As long as it's not related to me, they can do whatever they want."
Chu Ge secretly murmured to himself, lying down with his back towards the door direction before the door opened.
Squeak, the iron door was opened by a tall, thin guard, it was the same one who initially brought Chu Ge in. With his flashlight, he shone around the room, the strong light sweeping everywhere, blinding those caught by it.
"Hurry up, hurry up, don't delay my work here. Why loiter when the cell is so quiet?"
Chu Ge thought silently, yet his hopes shattered again. The guard entered, flashlight in hand, footsteps nearing him, then a strong light shone directly in his face.
"Damn! Did this guard come specifically for me?"
The saying "good things never come easily, bad things do" seemed to fit Chu Ge's current situation. As soon as the thought surfaced in his mind, a beam of flashlight hit his face.
Immediately, Chu Ge felt miserably kicked, and heard a voice in his ear that gave him a headache.
"What are you, a pig? Sleeping so soundly? Get up!"
The kick wasn't hard, just the guard tapping Chu Ge's shoulder with his foot, but Chu Ge cursed this guard's ancestors in his heart, wishing he could grab the guard's neck and throw him out.
Of course, it's just a thought. Chu Ge couldn't do that. He could only pretend to wake up, rubbing his eyes, and groggily opened them, shielding the flashlight's beam with his hand, sat up, showing a baffled expression.
"Awake? Get up and follow me." The guard stood in front of Chu Ge, instructing coldly.
"Excuse me, what happened?"
Chu Ge tentatively asked, but the guard frowned and glanced at him impatiently, "Just go when you're told, why all the chatter?"
Chu Ge was extremely unwilling, but he knew that there was no point in saying anything under these circumstances. With a heart full of displeasure, he stood up and followed the indifferently turning guard towards the door.
"Report to the guard!"
Just as Chu Ge and the guard were about to exit, a voice rang out from behind. The bald-headed man, whom Chu Ge had knocked down first, had sat up from his bunk.
The guard turned back and looked, "Speak."
The bald man's gaze wandered slightly, and he gave a mischievous grin.
"Well, here's the deal, this kid came today, and we wanted to teach him the rules here. Not only did this kid refuse to cooperate, but he also acted tough and fought seven or eight of us. That guy next to him, Li Zheming, is not asleep; he was knocked out by this kid's kick. Guard, you must stand up for us."
After speaking, the bald head raised his eyebrows provocatively at Chu Ge. Though he was once the 'head' here, he couldn't swallow this insult. Seeing the guard looking unfriendly towards Chu Ge, he just couldn't resist adding fuel to the fire.
The guard nodded expressionlessly, glanced sideways at Chu Ge without saying a word, and continued walking.
Chu Ge squinted at the bald guy, who dodged his gaze momentarily but soon met Chu Ge's eyes triumphantly, raising his right middle finger as if to say, "I complained, so what? Want to hit me?"
Chu Ge glanced at the bald guy again, a wicked curve appearing at the corner of his mouth, before turning to follow the guard out the door.
"Clang!"
The iron door was shut again, and Chu Ge rubbed his forehead. What kind of mess was this?
Chu Ge followed the guard for a while until they reached a secluded area, where the guard's tense expression relaxed. He slowed down, curiously sized up Chu Ge, and broke the silence between them.
"Earlier, Mad Dog Gang... that's the bald guy. Was what he said true?"
Seeing Chu Ge didn't answer immediately, the guard smiled slightly, took out a cigarette, and offered it to Chu Ge.
"Don't worry, I'm just purely curious, not trying to trouble you. If you don't want to talk, I won't ask. By the way, the reason I brought you out is that our director wants to see you. I'm his brother-in-law, so you don't need to treat me like an outsider. Earlier, I wasn't in a position to speak freely; had to keep up appearances."
Chu Ge didn't take the cigarette, smiled, and said, "I'm trying to quit smoking, thanks."
The guard waited a few seconds, seeing that Chu Ge still seemed unwilling to answer his question. He shook his head with some helplessness.
"You're quite cautious, aren't you? If you don't want to speak, you won't. But by the looks of it, what Mad Dog Gang said must be true. You're quite impressive! Handling seven or eight people alone, including Mad Dog Gang and Li Zheming, and without making much noise. I really want to know how you did it.
The guard muttered to himself a few words. By now, they had reached a room with a 'Director's Office' sign. The guard didn't knock but directly pushed the door open.
"Brother-in-law, I've brought the guest."
Chu Ge entered the room and was first greeted by the aroma of food. Then he saw a slightly overweight, somewhat balding man in a uniform who looked quite affable, probably in his forties, sitting on a sofa and turning his head to look at them.
The guard who brought Chu Ge locked the door, and the man on the sofa stood up with a smile.
"Mr. Chu, hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Su Wei. I've heard so much about you."
Chu Ge walked over, shook hands with Su Wei, and went straight to the point with a smile, "Director Su, you're too kind. May I ask why you've called me here?"
Chu Ge was still concerned about interrogating Li Zheming and didn't want to waste time here.
"Well, Captain Lin and I have been old friends, and he asked me to look after you. However, given the early time, many things are inconvenient; if I've neglected you, please don't mind. By the way, you didn't suffer any injustice inside, did you?"
Chu Ge felt speechless. The detention center is naturally such an environment, and he's here to work, not enjoy himself. He certainly couldn't take offense.
"Director Su, you're genuinely too kind. I'm fine, not wronged at all. But if I'm gone too long, it might not be good?"
Although feeling speechless inside, Chu Ge politely smiled slightly and shook his head, tactfully expressing his desire to return immediately.
What he didn't expect was that even though he had already expressed his desire to return to the detention center immediately, Su Wei still shook his head.
