Chapter 5 Interrogation, Psychological Warfare
Chapter 5 Interrogation, Psychological Warfare
Victoria Road Detention Centre, Mount Davis, Hong Kong Island.
This is the most important office of the Political Department, historically known as the "White House".
The Special Branch, the most secretive department in the police force, is directly under MI5 in London.
They hold power above the police force and can act without being bound by police regulations, yet the character review reports for police officers' promotions must pass through their hands.
Therefore, none of the 30,000 police officers in the entire department wanted to provoke them.
This is a windowless room with two rows of bright incandescent lights overhead.
Shen Shaofeng was locked to a specially made metal chair with a straight back, which made him feel very uncomfortable.
The one-way glass was embedded in the wall opposite him, and it was foreseeable that some important figures might be standing there observing him at any time.
Robert sat down with a colleague next to him and tossed a file onto the table.
"Shen Shaofeng lost his parents at a young age and grew up in the Sacred Heart Orphanage in Kowloon Tong. He obtained a Bachelor of Psychology degree from the University of Hong Kong at the age of 21."
"I graduated from the Police Academy's Inspectorate in September 1993, received the Silver Whistle Award that year, completed a one-year internship at the Police Tunnel Unit, and joined the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB) this October."
He tapped the table, emphasizing his words: "An orphan with a clean background, no connections in the police force, what makes him think he can get into the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau? And how did he manage to get on Li Wenbin's good side so quickly?"
He interrogated the suspect entirely in English.
[Ding, detected...]
"No need, I can handle it myself."
Shen Shaofeng rejected the system and said calmly, "Sir, you yourself said that I graduated with the Silver Flute Award. The police academy only produces 3 to 4 people every year."
"As a promising young police officer, is there a problem with being selected by the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB), the elite unit of the police force?"
Robert was surprised that Shen Shaofeng's English was so fluent. He chuckled and said, "No wonder you graduated with a psychology degree. You handle interrogations like a complete novice."
"The Silver Flute Award comes in three or four every year, but you're the only one who, upon joining the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau's First Team, immediately gained the trust of Supervisor Lee Man-bin and became one of his own."
He stared at Shen Shaofeng: "What did Li Wenbin take you to Jiangnan Restaurant for last night?"
"Investigate the case. Fang Zhanqiang, the suspect who escaped earlier, is one of Lao Wan's men. There are clues at the Dragon Head Banquet."
Robert slammed his fist on the table: "Investigate a case? You found out there are 7 dead and 25 injured, the ringleader is missing, and Li Wenbin is also missing?"
"There were gunmen at the scene, and their target was Ruan Ruolan. It seems to be an internal gang conflict, and we were dragged into it passively."
Robert jumped to his feet: "Who wanted to kill Ruan Ruolan? Was it your Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB) that wanted to silence her?"
Shen Shaofeng rolled his eyes: "Does your political department solve cases by guessing?"
Robert roared in fury: "You son of the beach!"
At this moment, Robert's Chinese colleague gently pressed down on his arm.
"Robert, calm down."
He turned to Shen Shaofeng and asked in Cantonese, "Sir Shen, my name is Yang Jinrong. We are all Chinese, and I understand your situation."
"Li Wenbin risked his life for you, and you value loyalty, which is a good thing. But there are some things you may not be fully aware of."
Yang Jinrong said in a gentle voice, "To tell you the truth, Huang Jiahui's kidnapping is the case that our political department is currently taking the most seriously."
"Li Wenbin's sudden arrest disrupted our entire plan. Now the supply line is cut off, Huang Jiahui's fate is unknown, and the higher-ups are furious."
"The most crucial thing is that Li Wenbin has also run away. You're staying, wanting to take the blame for him? Can you handle that?"
Shen Shaofeng stared at Yang Jinrong in front of him, lost in thought.
This should be the head of the security department in "Infernal Affairs 3".
According to the plot of this movie series, this person should have graduated from police academy in 92. Unexpectedly, he has already risen to the position of assistant interrogator in the political department so quickly. He is quite a figure.
Shen Shaofeng looked at Yang Jinrong, suddenly smiled, and said in Cantonese:
"Yang Sir, you say I can't carry this burden, but what about you? How long can your Special Branch exist?"
Robert frowned: "What do you mean?"
It turns out this person speaks Cantonese.
"The Joint Declaration was signed in 1984. It is now the end of 1994, less than three years until '97."
Shen Shaofeng's gaze remained calm: "The statement clearly states that the existing system in Hong Kong Island will remain unchanged for fifty years. But that doesn't include departments like yours, does it?"
"So it's very simple. Since this is a department that is likely to be completely disbanded in the near future, you should keep a low profile."
Robert and Yang Jinrong exchanged a glance but remained silent.
"If I'm not mistaken, the kidnapping of a wealthy man like Wong Ka-fai, who has a huge influence in the Chinese community, should originally have been handled by the Major Crimes Unit or our Organized Crime and Triad Bureau."
"Isn't your political department's forceful intervention just a way to accumulate some leverage, get a presentable record, and make arrangements when you return to London?"
Shen Shaofeng paused, then suddenly laughed: "Or, let me put it more bluntly."
"Is there some unspoken international relationship involved behind Huang Jiahui's kidnapping?"
Robert stood up abruptly, staring intently at Shen Shaofeng: "Who told you these things? Li Wenbin? Or Cai Yuanqi?"
Shen Shaofeng shook his head: "Just read the newspapers and the news, and you can figure it out with a little thought. You know how much dirty work your political department has done over the years."
Yang Jinrong suddenly clapped softly.
"Brilliant! To deduce so much from just a few details. Inspector Shen, you are the most outstanding rookie in the police force I have ever seen."
He then changed the subject: "But what good does it do you to say all this, besides making us angry?"
"Or rather, what exactly do you want to achieve?"
Upon hearing the other party finally bring this up, Shen Shaofeng did not hesitate: "I want to cooperate."
He switched back to English.
"If you want to know Li Wenbin's whereabouts and find Huang Jiahui, I can help, but I have conditions."
"What are the conditions?"
"Sorry, you two don't have the necessary permissions."
"I want to see someone who can actually make the decisions," Shen Shaofeng said, looking at the one-way mirror.
Robert, enraged, laughed coldly: "What right do you, a mere trainee inspector, have to negotiate with us?"
"Because I'm the only one who can contact Li Wenbin right now."
"And Li Wenbin may very well find Huang Jiahui through Ruan Ruolan, the old head of the pill company."
"If you don't want to find Wong Ka-fai, why are you in such a hurry to bring back a mere trainee inspector like me?"
He raised his voice, addressing the one-way glass: "Is it the officer behind that glass?"
Ten seconds later, the interrogation room door was pushed open, and a white-haired foreigner wearing a white shirt stood in the doorway.
"Robert, Yang, you two go out first."
Robert and Yang Jinrong exchanged a glance, then silently got up and left.
The man walked in, closed the door, and sat down opposite Shen Shaofeng.
His epaulettes were a double-stranded scepter with a golden ear of wheat wrapped around it.
This is the Assistant Commissioner of Police, a true member of the Constitutional Commissioner's management team.
"Shen, I'm Charles Henry, the deputy supervisor here."
His voice was deep, with a distinctive London accent.
"Hello, Mr. Henry, you are much more polite than your men. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Henry didn't respond, but took out a remote control from his pocket and pressed a button.
"I guarantee with my integrity that there are no recording devices operating here, Shen. What are your terms? Let's discuss."
