Chapter 11 Military Training
Chapter 11 Military Training
When Lu Siye woke up, his first thought was: What time is it?
He took out his phone and glanced at it.
12: 07.
There are 37 missed calls on my phone.
The counselor made the call.
He froze for two seconds, then suddenly sat up, his head hitting the upper bunk's bed frame, causing him to gasp in pain.
Holy crap!
The noise woke up the other three people in the dormitory.
Zhang Lei peeked out from under the covers, still half asleep, and asked, "What's wrong? What's wrong?"
"It's twelve o'clock," Lu Siye said.
The dormitory fell silent for a second.
Then all three of them jumped out of bed at the same time.
"12 o'clock???"
"Where's my alarm clock???"
"Didn't we agree to meet at eight o'clock???"
The scene was quite chaotic at one point.
Liu Chuang almost fell when he jumped down from the top bunk, while Zhang Lei was putting on his pants and looking for his glasses.
Zhou Mingyuan remained calm, slowly and methodically folding the blanket, when Zhang Lei grabbed him and pulled him down: "What are you folding for! Let's go!"
The four of them rushed out in a panic, but when they got to the door, they couldn't open it.
It's locked.
"Where's the dorm supervisor?" Liu Chuang pounded on the door. "Dorm supervisor!!!"
After taking a full five minutes of photos, footsteps were heard outside the door.
The key was inserted into the lock, and the door opened.
The dormitory supervisor stood at the door, looking at the four of them with a complicated expression.
"You're still alive?" she said. "My counselor has called me more than a dozen times, thinking you were dead inside."
Zhang Lei smiled apologetically, "Auntie, I'm so sorry, we overslept..."
"Don't tell me, go tell your counselor." The aunt stepped aside. "Hurry up, she's waiting in the office."
The four of them rushed downstairs and ran all the way to the counselor's office.
In the office, the counselor was sitting there drinking tea. When he saw them come in, he put his teacup on the table.
"Fine," he said. "On the first day of school and the first day of military training, the four of you will disappear en masse."
Just as Zhang Lei was about to explain, the counselor raised his hand to stop him.
"Don't tell me you overslept. Thirty-seven phone calls, not a single one answered. The dorm supervisor knocked on the door for half an hour before opening it. Were you guys dead asleep or something?"
The four people lowered their heads and dared not utter a sound.
The counselor sighed.
"According to school rules, being absent from the first day of military training without a valid reason would result in a major demerit. However, considering that you did oversleep and didn't intentionally skip training, we'll just give you a demerit instead."
He paused, looking at the four of them.
"Giving a demerit on the first day of school? You guys are pretty impressive."
As Zhang Lei left the office, he looked up at the sky and sighed, "I'm doomed. I'm going to get a disciplinary action on the first day of school. My mom will kill me if she finds out."
Liu Chuang scratched his head: "So, are we still going to military training this afternoon?"
"Of course you'd be fired if you didn't go!"
Lu Siye followed behind without saying a word.
Two o'clock in the afternoon, on the playground.
The sun was so strong it made your scalp tingle, and the plastic track emitted an unpleasant smell.
The freshmen were divided into several squares according to their colleges and stood in neat rows.
The instructors, dressed in camouflage uniforms, shouted slogans at the top of their lungs.
Lu Siye stood in the last row, squinting at the front.
heat.
It's fucking hot.
"Hey you in the back row! Stand up straight!"
The instructor's voice brought him back to reality.
He raised his head and straightened his body.
Then he saw Su Nian.
She stood beside the formation, dressed in camouflage and wearing a hat, with no expression on her face.
Teaching assistant.
Lu Siye was stunned for a moment.
He almost forgot that Su Nian was also from this school.
They met each other's gaze across half the playground.
Su Nian's gaze fell on him and lingered for two seconds.
Then it was moved.
But Lu Siye saw through it.
She wasn't very happy.
No reply to the message.
Four messages, none of which were replied to.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but then felt that saying anything would be pointless.
Training has begun.
Stand at attention for half an hour.
The sun was so strong it made me dizzy, and sweat dripped from my forehead, stinging my eyes.
Lu Siye resisted the urge to move, his eyes fixed on the tree in front of him.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Su Nian walk past him.
She was carrying something in her hand.
He only saw it clearly when he got closer.
A 2.5-liter water bottle, the kind of mineral water bottle sold in supermarkets.
She walked up to him and handed him the bottle.
"Take it."
Lu Siye paused for a moment, then took the bottle.
It's quite heavy.
Su Nian didn't say anything more and turned to leave.
Lu Siye stared blankly at the bottle in his hand.
What's going on?
"that……"
He tried to call out to her, but she had already gone far away.
The training that followed made him understand.
March in formation.
Kick it over and over again.
They chanted slogans over and over again.
The sun was getting stronger and stronger, and I was sweating so much it felt like I had taken a bath.
The people around them started to feel the strain; some turned pale, some were panting, and several had to be helped to a shady spot to rest.
Lu Siye was also tired.
But he found that he didn't seem that thirsty.
He glanced at the bottle in his hand, unscrewed the cap, and took a sip.
It's a bit salty.
brine.
He paused for a moment, then took another sip.
Salt was indeed added.
When you're exposed to the sun and sweat a lot, just drinking water isn't enough; you need to replenish your salt intake.
He looked at the bottle in his hand and suddenly understood why Su Nian had given it to him.
She didn't say anything.
She simply carried a large bottle of saline solution and, in front of everyone, handed it to him.
Lu Siye held the bottle, somewhat dazed.
During his break, he sat under the shade of a tree, watching the crowd in the distance.
Several boys surrounded Su Nian, talking about something.
Su Nian stood there, her face expressionless, occasionally nodding or saying something.
The boys laughed and chimed in, but she remained indifferent, seemingly unresponsive.
But Lu Siye noticed that she would occasionally glance in his direction.
Just one glance, then I looked away.
He lowered his head and took another sip of water.
The sun was very strong, making people feel drowsy.
He leaned against a tree, squinting at the playground.
Su Nian stood in the sunlight, her camouflage uniform looking neater than the others, her hat pulled low, revealing a small section of her chin.
Several boys were still talking to her, but she remained indifferent, neither warm nor cold.
Lu Siye suddenly remembered that Baozi seemed to have said that everyone called her the Ice Queen.
It's really cold.
By the time the afternoon training session ended, the sun was already setting in the west.
The instructor lined up the students, shouted a few slogans, and then said, "Next is club recruitment time. Those who want to join a club, go check out the area over there on the playground. Those who don't want to can go back to their dorms and rest. It's not mandatory."
A commotion broke out in the crowd.
"Not mandatory?"
"Then I definitely won't go back."
"Let's go, let's go back and take a shower."
Lu Siye followed the crowd out.
He wasn't very interested in clubs.
This thing doesn't earn you any credits; it's just something you use to get a fake sick note when you don't want to attend a low-level class.
He's someone who lives on student aid; how could he have time to join clubs?
The tents of various clubs have already been set up along the edge of the playground.
Some people were shouting through megaphones, while others were handing out flyers; it was quite a lively scene.
Lu Siye did not walk that way.
He found a corner, squatted down, leaned against the wall, and squinted to doze off.
I'm tired after being in the sun all day.
He had just closed his eyes when he heard footsteps approaching.
Someone was standing in front of him.
He opened his eyes.
Su Nian stood there, holding a piece of paper in her hand, and handed it to him.
"Fill it out."
Lu Siye glanced down.
Taoyuan University Martial Arts Club Application Form.
"I don't join clubs," he said.
Su Nian ignored him.
She squatted down, placed the paper on her knees, took out a pen from her pocket, and quickly wrote three words in the name column.
Lu Siye.
Then she stood up and took the paper back.
"alright."
Lu Siye: "..."
"No, I said I wouldn't add it..."
"Added." Su Nian looked down at her phone, tapping the screen a few times. "I've added you to the group, remember to accept."
Then she turned and left.
Lu Siye squatted in the corner, watching her back, unable to say a word.
My phone vibrated.
He took it out to look.
QQ message.
Su Nian invites you to join the group chat "Taoyuan University Martial Arts Club".
Group members: 287 people.
He stared at the screen for a few seconds, then clicked "accept".
The group chat is very lively.
Messages kept popping up one after another.
Welcome to the newcomer!
"New couple's hot photos!"
"Which college are the new students from?"
"Stop it, they just came in."
Lu Siye didn't reply, and silently set the group to Do Not Disturb mode.
But he noticed a few messages.
"By the way, have you heard? There's been a lot of talk about that Xia Lan thing online lately."
"I heard, I heard. They say Jiugongling is under lockdown."
"Really?"
"I don't know, but I don't believe it."
"I believe it. My grandfather said he saw Xia Lan when he was young."
"You've met your grandfather? Then you're a descendant of the Xia Lan?"
"Absolutely. It's a family tradition passed down through generations; they say our ancestors included a Xia Lan (a type of martial arts expert).
"Impressive, impressive. So, do you know anything about... Yuan Qi?"
"Of course. But it's not convenient to show you now. I'll show you when I have the chance."
A group of people below joined in the commotion.
Lu Siye's lips twitched as he looked at the messages.
Descendants of the Xia Lan?
Primordial Qi?
He doesn't even know the most basic Xia Lan theory, yet he's here bragging.
He ignored it and was about to leave the group chat when Su Nian's private message popped up.
Are you free this weekend?
Lu Siye thought for a moment and replied with a single word: "Yes."
"Going to the martial arts gym this weekend."
"?"
"My dad said so. Jiugongling has been sealed off; people from above have gone to investigate. Baozi and the others have also come down and are at the martial arts school now."
She paused, then sent another message.
"You're still in the Qi gathering stage. I'll teach you how to unleash Qi this weekend."
Lu Siye looked at these messages and remained silent for a few seconds.
Yi Songjin once said that everyone has primordial qi in their body, but most people cannot perceive it.
Only through training can one gather primordial energy and then unleash it.
He is currently stuck at step two.
Gather energy.
"Okay," he replied.
Su Nian did not send any more messages.
Lu Siye stared at the screen for a while, then exited the chat window.
Then he saw Tang Yuan's profile picture.
They changed to matching couple hairstyles.
Two people, a pair.
He clicked in and looked at the chat box.
The last message was from three days ago.
He sent: I'm going back to school in a few days.
Her reply was: Oh.
His finger hovered over the screen, as if trying to type something.
A few words appeared in the input box.
"How are you?"
Delete it.
"congratulations."
Delete it.
"that……"
Delete it.
He stared at the screen for a long time, but in the end, he didn't send anything.
Exit the chat window.
Lock screen.
Put the phone back in my pocket.
He stood up and walked towards the dormitory.
The club recruitment tents are still there by the playground, with people handing out flyers and chanting slogans.
The new students walked by in twos and threes, some holding flyers, others already in the group, looking at their phones as they walked.
Lu Siye walked through the crowd, head down, step by step back.
Inside the dormitory, the three of them were already playing games.
Zhang Lei, wearing headphones, frantically typed on the keyboard while muttering curses under his breath.
Liu Chuang sat next to him, holding a controller in his hand, also playing.
Zhou Mingyuan lay in bed reading, glancing up at the screen every now and then.
Seeing Lu Siye enter, Liu Chuang put down the controller and came closer.
"Hey, Lu Siye."
Lu Siye glanced at him.
Liu Chuang lowered his voice, his face full of gossip: "That teaching assistant, the one who brought you water today, who's he to you?"
Lu Siye paused for a moment.
"What's wrong?"
"I noticed she kept glancing in your direction today," Liu Chuang said, winking. "Do you know her?"
Lu Siye remained silent for two seconds.
"Cousin," he said.
Liu Chuang was stunned for a moment: "Cousin? Really?"
"real."
"Why didn't you say so before?"
"I forgot."
Liu Chuang scratched his head, leaned closer, and lowered his voice: "Could you help me put in a good word for her? I added her as a friend, but she won't accept. She ignores me when I talk to her."
Lu Siye looked at him and suddenly felt like laughing.
"You want to pursue her?"
"Of course I want to," Liu Chuang said matter-of-factly. "With looks like that, who wouldn't want to?"
Lu Siye remained silent.
Liu Chuang added, "Could you put in a good word for me? Just introduce yourself, say I'm a nice person, and ask her to add me as a friend."
Lu Siye thought for a moment and said, "She might already have a boyfriend."
Liu Chuang was stunned for a moment: "Huh? Really?"
"I don't know," Lu Siye said. "I'm not that familiar with her."
That's true.
Not familiar with it.
They weren't really familiar with each other.
He didn't even know what she liked.
Liu Chuang sighed and waved his hand, "That's true. Someone as good-looking as her must already have a boyfriend. Oh well, never mind."
He turned around and went back to playing the game.
Lu Siye stood behind him, watching his back.
After a while, he went to his seat and sat down.
Outside the window, the sun was setting, and the sky was ablaze with an orange-red hue.
He looked at the sunset, his mind a jumble of thoughts.
My phone vibrated again.
He glanced down at it.
It was posted by Su Nianfa.
Don't forget the weekend.
He stared at those four words for a while.
Then he replied with a single word.
"Um."
