Chapter 349 The Gun Jammed
Chapter 349 The Gun Jammed
"Look! It's getting closer! I've finally got it! Watch how I take care of it!"
Wang Ergou gripped the butt of the gun tightly, his finger already on the trigger, his whole being in a state of extreme excitement.
Looking at the frequency and amplitude of the swaying grass, Li Xiangyang felt something was wrong; it was too much and didn't seem like the behavior of a lynx at all.
He reached out and pulled the agitated Wang Ergou back, lowering his voice to say, "Don't be impulsive, take a look first. Something's not right. There's a tree over there, let me climb up and check."
After saying that, he pulled Wang Ergou over, climbed the big tree, and carefully searched for the best vantage point among the branches.
Looking down from the tree, the view is much wider.
About seventy meters away, Li Xiangyang saw a huge dark shadow moving slowly through the grass.
“It’s not a lynx,” Li Xiangyang said in a low voice, “it’s a black bear, and it’s quite big, at least 300 pounds!”
He quickly climbed down from the tree and briefly explained to Wang Ergou.
"A bear would be even better! That's why we went into the mountains, let's just shoot it and take it down!" Upon hearing that it was a bear, Wang Ergou became even more excited and raised his gun to aim again.
Li Xiangyang quickly stopped him again, analyzing with a serious expression, "Ergou, don't be foolish. This black bear is so big, with thick skin and flesh. If we don't kill it with one shot and it gets enraged, it can rush up to us in the blink of an eye, and then we'll both be in danger. We have to wait for a favorable opportunity, until it leaves this patch of grass and gets to an open, flat area..."
The two kept a safe distance and followed silently.
The black bear seemed oblivious to its surroundings, occasionally stopping to dig at the roots of underground plants with its paws.
“It’s looking for food,” Li Xiangyang explained softly. “It’s autumn, and bears need to store up fat for winter.”
As the black bear moved, the surrounding terrain gradually changed.
The grass was no longer so dense, replaced by sparse trees and some rock outcrops.
“The terrain is starting to turn in our favor,” Li Xiangyang observed the surroundings. “If it heads towards that hillside ahead, it’ll be a good opportunity. Get ready.”
Seeing that the bear was indeed approaching the hillside, Li Xiangyang excitedly raised his gun.
Wang Ergou also raised his gun, took a deep breath, and steadied his hands.
The black bear stood atop the hill, its back to them, sniffing the air.
"Now!" Li Xiangyang whispered.
The two men aimed simultaneously and held their breath.
"boom!"
The crisp sound of gunfire echoed through the valley.
The black bear let out a painful howl, but instead of falling, it turned around and charged down like a madman.
Even though they fired at the same time, only he hit the target. Li Xiangyang knew without looking that Wang Ergou's gun must have jammed.
Right now, figuring out the cause is pointless; the immediate priority is to kill the enraged bear as quickly as possible. Otherwise, things will get dangerous.
"boom!"
Li Xiangyang fired his second shot, but because the black bear was moving too fast, it only grazed its shoulder.
This enraged the black bear even more, and it charged towards the two at an astonishing speed.
"Scatter!" Li Xiangyang shouted, jumping to the right.
In a panic, Wang Ergou lunged to the left, barely avoiding the black bear's first charge.
The black bear seemed to hesitate for a moment, unsure which one to chase, and finally chose Wang Ergou, who was closer.
"Ergou, run!" Li Xiangyang shouted anxiously, while taking aim again.
Wang Ergou tripped over a stone and fell to the ground, just as the black bear was about to pounce on him.
Just at this critical moment, the little goldfish hovering above his head swooped down, its sharp claws aimed at the black bear's eyes.
The black bear was startled by the sudden attack, raised its head and roared, its attention temporarily diverted.
Li Xiangyang seized the opportunity, calmly aimed, and pulled the trigger at the black bear's head.
"boom!"
The shot hit its mark precisely; the black bear swayed a few times before collapsing to the ground with a thud.
"Ergou! Are you alright?" Li Xiangyang immediately ran over.
Wang Ergou scrambled to his feet, dusted himself off, and said, his face pale, "N-nothing, you scared me to death."
He looked up at Little Gold, which was circling in the air, and said gratefully, "Thanks to Little Gold, otherwise I would have been finished."
Li Xiangyang patted him on the shoulder: "Remember to clean your gun more often next time, so it doesn't jam again. It could be dangerous in the wilderness."
Wang Ergou scratched his head sheepishly: "I'll definitely take good care of the gun when I get back."
The two walked up to the black bear and examined it carefully.
This is an adult black bear, weighing at least 300 pounds, with glossy black fur and in excellent condition.
"We've made a fortune this time! Bear skin, bear gall, bear paws—each one is worth a lot of money," Wang Ergou said excitedly, completely oblivious to the danger he had just faced.
Li Xiangyang nodded: "Yes, but it's getting late, we need to find a place to spend the night nearby."
He looked around and pointed to a cave not far away: "That looks good, let's go check it out."
The two cautiously approached the cave, and after confirming that there was no danger, they decided to set up camp there.
"Let's deal with the bear first; we need to take it back tomorrow," Li Xiangyang said.
As darkness fell, the two got busy.
Li Xiangyang skillfully peeled off the bear skin.
"We're in for a treat tonight," Wang Ergou said with a smile.
He lit a campfire not far from the cave entrance and grilled some bear meat skewers on sticks.
"Don't eat too much. Bear meat is greasy, and eating too much can make you feel unwell," Li Xiangyang warned.
Wang Ergou nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on the sizzling, oily roasted meat.
As night fell completely, the mountains and forests became quiet.
The campfire illuminated their faces and dispelled the chill and darkness around them.
Li Xiangyang leaned against the stone wall, gazing silently at the flickering flames.
"Tell me, after my son is born, should I take him hunting in the mountains?" he suddenly asked.
Wang Ergou took a bite of the roasted meat and mumbled, "Of course! Such a great skill must be passed down."
Li Xiangyang smiled and said, "I'd like to pass it on, but it's not certain that it will be allowed in the future."
"You're right. Nobody can say for sure when there will be a complete gun ban, so it's better not to teach guns in the first place..."
The two chatted for a while, and then took turns keeping watch.
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Li Xiangyang gently nudged Wang Ergou, who was still fast asleep.
"Get up, we need to get down the mountain quickly."
Wang Ergou yawned and slowly got up: "So early?"
"If we don't leave now, the meat will spoil." Li Xiangyang had already started packing his things.
After a quick wash, the two divided their loads and began their descent.
The danger of getting lost was over, and today they quickly found the right direction by following the way they came.
