Chapter 1062 - 1033: Flames Soaring into the Sky (Part 1)
"Oh, no! I can’t do anything immoral for you anymore!" The Mayor shouted. Last time, just appearing on screen resulted in three deaths; he surely would not cooperate this time! After all, he still had the consciousness of a Mayor.
"You are truly adorable! But rest assured, you won’t be troubled this time. Shouldn’t Director Mo Luo’s experience be thoroughly investigated? From what I know, CIA personnel are in Palermo!" A chuckling laughter echoed, and the person vanished in front of the Mayor, leaving a black envelope embossed with a blood-dripping raven on the table.
Edmund entered the room amid hushed whispers, a room that Mo Luo had roared in countless times, and now it was his. Under the heated haze, a little reason remained, modifying nothing about the food; it was as before. He was still an acting Director, wearing the acting hat, which meant this place wasn’t entirely his, and he couldn’t just act on his whims.
This acting Director didn’t make any sweeping changes upon taking office, but stripped Hua Qingyi of all his privileges in prison, and began a deep investigation into accusations against him. In other words, he started to enforce Mo Luo’s orders in another way, burdening another person, Deputy Police Chief Rochester.
Facing this man prettier than women, he’d rather guard that empty city. So, on the second day of my new appointment, I camped early at the Director’s office to block this Director.
"Rochester, what’s wrong? Didn’t sleep well last night? Your dark circles are heavy!" Facing his old partner turned subordinate, Edmund’s concern seemed a bit false.
"Edmund! Ah, it’s Director Edmund, I think you should find someone else to interrogate that Hua Qingyi. I’d rather guard that empty city than see that guy again!"
"Come in and sit, what’s the matter, my old friend? Is he a demon, infuriating you like this? Did you spend all night with that guy?" Edmund wiped his face with a towel; he genuinely felt hot.
"Yes! His mouth is harder than stone; he refuses to say anything!"
"Didn’t you use extraordinary means on him? When facing unusual prisoners, we can use certain necessary methods to make them speak!" Edmund implied.
"Of course! But it didn’t work on him! He doesn’t respond to whites or reds and even injured other brothers! We’re no match for him."
"Rochester, for those with dangerous violent tendencies, we should confine them for twenty-four hours and chain them, won’t it suffice?" Edmund spoke lightly. "This young man is too foolish, already labeled a murderer; he should behave. Now he’s also charged with assaulting a police officer." Edmund shook his head disdainfully. "Rochester, hold him for a few days without food, then bring him out for interrogation; for such people, you must first wear down their will before striking. He’ll be easier to crack. I’ll interrogate him myself later."
"Director Edmund, you’re here early today!" Meisai leaned at the Director’s office door and peeked inside. "Rochester is here too!"
"I was just planning to leave." Rochester initially wanted to say something, but reconsidered, as his goal was achieved anyway.
"Meisai, are you looking for me?" Facing the Deputy Director who should sit where he was now, Edmund felt no guilt and casually called his name.
"I heard you instructed Rochester to interrogate Hua Qingyi overnight yesterday?"
"Yes!"
"But I heard people say violence was used during the interrogation, which wouldn’t sound good if spread, and might harm our police station’s reputation. Such things never happened under Mo Luo."
"Meisai, you’re overthinking. For such dangerous individuals, extraordinary measures should be employed; Mo Luo was too soft."
"Oh, is that so? I thought Rochester acted independently. Edmund, although you consider our police station’s case resolution rate, there are many gaps in Hua Qingyi’s evidence. I’m worried if this spreads, it’ll be considered forced confession. Although he’s a suspect now, he has a background, so be cautious not to unknowingly offend people!"
"Meisai, I’m the Director now; I know what I’m doing. You just need to manage your own matters." Edmund coldly sat behind his desk, pretending to read files and ignoring Meisai.
"OK! As long as you think it’s fine, I won’t worry. Director Edmund, if nothing else, I’ll leave first!"
Bang! Edmund slammed the file heavily on the desk, Meisai’s sarcasm almost infuriated him. "Everyone’s laughing at me; I’ll show you my abilities!"
Hua Qingyi was moved to a new place, no longer the cell fitting six single beds, but confined in a small dark room barely big enough to brush the walls with his butt when turning!
Licking the wound on his arm with his tongue, this stark contrast in treatment felt all too real. Without a bed to lie on, he sat against the back wall, stretching his legs; just five centimeters forward would hit the iron door. "Damn it! This scumbag, I’ll get rid of you first when I get out!" For Hua Qingyi with long legs, squatting was less comfortable than standing.
"Shouting so loudly, no one can hear!" Hua Qingyi didn’t lift his head; he’d been expecting this voice for a while now.
"What are you doing here? I just moved, and there you are right behind me. This must be part of your scheme!" Hua Qingyi stood up from the ground in irritation, so he could face the guy outside directly.
"I’ve got news for you!" Xiao Lin lit a cigarette, took a drag, and slipped it through the gap to Hua Qingyi. "The old man has temporarily stepped down due to illness, which means you no longer have any protection from any faction."
"So I guess I’m just a rat that anyone can suppress now?"
"To be precise, you no longer have any value to exploit!"
"Well, that perfectly fits the current situation." Hua Qingyi glanced around swiftly.
"I understand the old man’s mindset. If you still act recklessly, then stay here! Letting you out would only ruin my plans!"
Hua Qingyi looked seriously at Xiao Lin. "I saw Hong!"
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Hua Qingyi’s sudden change of topic stunned Xiao Lin. "He’s dead!"
"He now goes by Tang! Although the soul inside isn’t Hong, every other part of him is the original Hong."
"Don’t think saying this will make me let you out!"
"Xiao Lin! This isn’t Mo Luo. If I don’t figure out a way to escape myself, that guy outside will seize the opportunity to kill me. Just looking at this place tells me, whether it’s you or that bastard, you’re manipulating not puppets, but people! And as long as they’re human, they’ll have a heart, and it’ll change!"
"Killing Wang Zhantian was like adding a shackle to yourself. Have you considered the Hua family?"
"It’s all going to lead to death anyway, right?"
"I’m just here to tell you, Elder Hua is doing quite well now. If you’ve got the ability, then get out on your own, but I’ll still lock you up!"
Hua Qingyi’s gaze toward Xiao Lin was complex. He had just mentioned Hong, yet he couldn’t read any clues or emotion from Xiao Lin’s pitch-black eyes. At what point did this guy become so cold?
The taste of the half-cigarette in his mouth brought back memories!
"Oh, looks like you have a visitor, eh?" Tang popped his head up from above, holding a dirty and oddly-shaped stone slab.
"You pierced through the ceiling?"
"Too bad you’re too big to fit through!" Tang measured the space by eye, ultimately deciding to stay up top. "Just here to notify you, Edmund is planning to target you. Watch yourself! But it’s not entirely his fault; Mo Luo didn’t finish the job neatly, and someone messed with it. The files that got you locked up have now really become solid evidence of your crimes! You’re definitely the first on his list!"
"The first to become his achievement!" Right after speaking, the sound of leather shoes echoed down the corridor. Hua Qingyi looked up, and the little hole that was uncovered was sealed up, leaving no gap visible.
Two police officers put heavy shackles on Hua Qingyi before pushing him out of the small dark room. Walking with these things for the first time was genuinely awkward. Down a long corridor, two floors down, then another long hallway before finally reaching the interrogation room. Edmund was already leisurely sitting inside, and Hua Qingyi was sure this guy did it on purpose.
"Hua Qingyi! Male, nationality: Chinese, age: 25. Do you know what crimes you’ve committed?" Edmund cut straight to the point, dragging the heavy chains, Hua Qingyi stood there defiant!
"No idea!" Three words! The same question seemed to be asked again today.
"Really?" Edmund sneered. "I’ll make Mr. Hua remember the crimes he’s committed."
The echo still lingered in the air as the two officers escorting Hua Qingyi pinned him on either side. Edmund picked up a thick phone book from the table and smacked it against Hua Qingyi’s stomach. Then he swung his right fist down, even though the phone book was thick, the force was still enough to impact his internal organs. Hua Qingyi suddenly arched his body, bent forward, mentally cursing Xiao Lin’s ancestors for eight generations, yet still feeling unsatisfied.
"I heard you’re quite good at fighting, huh? With this thing, let’s see how you... Ah!" Without waiting for Edmund to launch a second strike, the chains he was weighing were mysteriously wrapped around his neck, and somehow Hua Qingyi had escaped the grasp of the two officers, crossing his arms over his chest while Edmund’s head was clamped between the chains.
