Chapter 389 Arrives Just in Time
Chapter 389 Arrives Just in Time
"I didn't start this!" Cheng Hai said alertly, immediately unplugging the cable, but it was too late.
The door at the other end of the hall slid open, and three fully armed figures rushed in.
"Don't move!" The leader was none other than the scarred-face man from yesterday. This time, his weapon was not a pulse gun, but a live-fire rifle.
"Hand over the data!"
Yu Yang and Cheng Hai slowly raised their hands. How did they track them down?
Scarface's accomplices, a tall, thin man and a short, stocky woman, quickly took control of the exit.
"How did you find this place?" Yu Yang asked, while glancing out of the corner of his eye for possible escape routes.
The scarred man sneered, "You think you're the only smart ones? We installed trackers on the 'Ghost,' right when your dear friend was modifying it."
He looked at Cheng Hai, "Your technique is good, but not good enough."
Cheng Hai's face turned pale: "How long have you been monitoring the research institute?"
“Enough time,” the scarred-face man said, walking toward the control panel. “Now, hand over the complete data, including the samples you collected yesterday.”
Yu Yang noticed that the scarred-face's accomplices were inspecting the other containers, especially the largest one in the center.
The short, stocky woman spoke into the communicator and then nodded in acknowledgment.
“The boss said to take everything,” she reported, “including live samples.”
“Did you hear that, Doctor?” The scarred man pointed a gun at Yu Yang. “Cooperate, and maybe we can spare your lives. After all, you're the only experts who truly understand these things.”
Yu Yang and Cheng Hai exchanged a glance.
Cheng Hai shook his head almost imperceptibly—don't act rashly.
“I need access to the main system,” Yu Yang said slowly. “The data is encrypted; direct transmission will corrupt the files.”
The scarred man considered it for a moment, then nodded: "Don't try anything funny."
He gestured for the tall, thin man to follow Yu Yang.
Yu Yang walked to the console, pretending to operate the interface, but actually looking for a way to trigger the system alarm.
Cheng Hai was taken to the central container and forced to assist in preparing for sample extraction.
"Who exactly are you working for?" Cheng Hai asked while connecting the equipment. "The Deep Sea Eye wouldn't be interested in this kind of scientific research project."
The scarred man laughed: "What do you think the Eye of the Deep is? A bunch of pirates? We're much more important than that."
He leaned closer to Cheng Hai, "The new world needs new humans, Doctor. And this is the beginning!"
Just then, Yu Yang found what he was looking for—a red button labeled "Emergency Protocol".
He pressed it without hesitation.
A piercing alarm instantly filled the entire hall, and all the lights turned a flashing red.
The security system announced in a voice: "Unauthorized access detected! Activate defense protocol!"
"What did you do?!" Scarface roared as he turned to Yu Yang, but it was too late.
The ceiling of the hall opened, and several spherical devices descended, releasing blinding light and deafening sound waves.
Yu Yang was prepared; he closed his eyes and covered his ears.
Caught off guard, the intruders crouched down in pain.
Cheng Hai seized the opportunity to break free and rushed towards Yu Yang.
"Let's go!" He grabbed Yu Yang and ran towards the side door.
Gunshots rang out behind me, and bullets struck the metal wall, sending sparks flying.
They rushed into a narrow corridor, with Cheng Hai leading the way.
"This way! There's an emergency exit leading outside!"
As the alarm sounded, the entire building seemed to come alive.
The automatic doors opened and closed continuously, the ventilation system sprayed out white mist, and the sound of some kind of mechanical operation came from deep within.
"Are they activating the self-destruct system?" Yu Yang asked as he ran.
“No, it’s a relocation procedure,” Cheng Hai replied breathlessly. “Pre-civilization facilities all have contingency plans. Those containers are going to be moved!”
Footsteps and angry shouts came from behind.
After turning a corner, Cheng Hai suddenly stopped and pointed to an architectural diagram on the wall.
"Look! There's a submarine dock at the base of the tower! If we can get there!" Cheng Hai exclaimed excitedly.
An explosion suddenly came from behind, and the shockwave knocked the two of them to the ground.
The corridor ceiling began to collapse, and metal beams and pipes fell down.
"The security system has triggered the structural locking mechanism!" Cheng Hai scrambled to his feet, pulling Yu Yang along as they continued forward. "The entire area needs to be sealed off!"
They barely made it through a closing safety door. Cheng Hai's back was grazed by the falling door frame, and his wetsuit tore open.
The corridor ahead had partially collapsed, leaving only a small gap through which one could barely squeeze.
"You go first!" Cheng Hai pushed Yu Yang forward.
Just as Yu Yang crawled through the gap, another explosion shook the entire building.
This collapse was more severe, completely blocking the passage.
"Cheng Hai!" Yu Yang tried to move the rubble, but to no avail.
Through the gap, he saw that Cheng Hai was surrounded by three pursuers.
"Keep going!" Cheng Hai shouted. "Remember the tower! Complete our mission!"
The scarred man raised his gun, and Cheng Hai suddenly laughed.
He pulled a small device from his pocket—an EMP jammer.
"The Eye of the Deep Sea?" Cheng Hai said sarcastically. "Let's try real darkness."
He pressed the button.
All the lights went out instantly, including the lights on the pursuers' helmets.
In the absolute darkness, Yu Yang heard chaotic shouts and sounds of fighting, followed by a gunshot.
"Cheng Hai!" he called out in despair, but only silence answered.
More sounds of collapse came from all directions, and Yu Yang knew he couldn't wait any longer.
With tears in his eyes, he turned and ran toward the tower marked on the diagram.
The corridor grew narrower and narrower, and the air grew thinner and thinner.
After taking the wrong turn several times, Yu Yang finally found the stairwell leading to the tower.
Upon reaching the bottom floor, a heavy security door blocked the way.
The control panel is corrupted and cannot be opened normally.
Yu Yang tried his best to ram and pry open the door, but to no avail.
As the oxygen ran out, he began to feel dizzy.
Just then, Lin Liuyi finally arrived with the system.
Yu Yang didn't know who the other person was, but things couldn't get any worse than they were now.
He suppressed his dizziness and clicked to agree to the video call.
Lin Liuyi was delighted to have gotten through to her reader again.
Seeing that the person opposite was covering their head and walking unsteadily, I jumped again.
"What's wrong? What do you need right now? Tell me!"
"Oxygen, oxygen! I need oxygen!" Due to the lack of oxygen in his brain, Yu Yang's vision went black, and he didn't even have the strength to think.
But the moment Lin Liuyi asked him, his survival instinct made him answer.
He needs oxygen! Lots and lots of oxygen!
"Hey, yes, there are plenty!"
Several oxygen cylinders were passed around in an instant, and Yu Yang strained to see them clearly.
He didn't know how the other person came up with such an old-fashioned oxygen cylinder, but as long as it was an oxygen cylinder, that was enough.
He struggled to reach the nearest oxygen cylinder, and finally he was able to breathe deeply.
