Chapter 19 You have a good memory?
Chapter 19 You have a good memory?
At 2 p.m., Nie Xiguang arrived at the management department's office area.
The layout here is different from the finance department; there aren't as many partitions, making it feel more open.
The sounds of telephones, conversations, and printers mingled together.
Nie Xiguang stood at the door and looked around. He immediately saw Yin Jie, who was typing rapidly on her computer.
"Yin Jie!" Nie Xiguang called out to her.
Upon hearing this, Yin Jie looked up and, seeing it was her roommate Nie Xiguang, immediately greeted her, "Xiguang, you really came! Welcome, welcome!"
She took the cardboard box from Nie Xiguang and said warmly, "Here, I've prepared your seat; it's right next to me!"
The space wasn't large, but it was very clean and well-lit.
"Thank you for helping me tidy up," Nie Xiguang said.
"Why are you being so polite with me! We're comrades now!" Yin Jie lowered her voice and blinked. "Let me tell you, being transferred to the management department isn't necessarily a bad thing. The finance department has a lot of rules and is very stressful. Here... the people are a bit more diverse, but there are also more interesting things to do."
"General Manager Lin personally explained your work arrangements to our director. I think there might be a turning point."
Just then, Director Wang from the management department walked over.
"You must be Nie Xiguang? Welcome to the management department." Director Wang said with a smile. "President Lin specifically instructed that you be given a job. This job needs to allow you to fully understand the company's processes and also allow you to focus on learning."
"How about this, you start by organizing the archives? What do you think?"
Nie Xiguang's heart sank.
Archives?
This is probably the most inconspicuous place in the company.
Yin Jie was also taken aback; this arrangement was clearly different from what she had expected.
Director Wang seemed oblivious to their expressions and continued, "The company's contracts, project files, and important meeting minutes from previous years are all there. This job really cultivates a person's meticulousness and patience. Moreover, you have access to the company's most core information, which is very helpful for understanding the company's overall operations."
"General Manager Lin specifically emphasized that he hopes you can 'calm your mind, learn, and reflect' here."
Hearing these three words from Director Wang's mouth made Nie Xiguang feel an indescribable pressure.
"Okay, Director Wang, I will do my best." Nie Xiguang nodded in agreement without hesitation.
When you're under someone's roof, you have to bow your head.
"That's good. Yin Jie, take Xi Guang to familiarize herself with the location and regulations of the archives room. She can start working this afternoon." After giving the instructions, Director Wang turned and left.
Yin Jie stuck out her tongue and whispered to Nie Xiguang, "The archives... Xiguang, you need to be mentally prepared."
"There's a lot of dust there, and it's incredibly quiet, so quiet you can hear your own heartbeat."
Nie Xiguang smiled and said, "It's alright, it's better to be quiet."
She followed Yin Jie through the office area to the door of a separate room at the end of the corridor.
The sign on the door reads "Archives Room (1)".
As I pushed open the door, the smell of old paper wafted out.
The room was very large, almost half the size of the finance department.
Rows of tall metal filing cabinets stood in the room, like silent giants.
The cabinet is labeled with the year and department name.
"These cabinets mainly contain contracts and project documents from the last five years; the earlier ones are in that small storage room inside," Yin Jie said as she walked in.
"My job is to collect the documents that need to be stored from various departments. I need to classify them, number them, enter the information into the computer, and put them on the appropriate shelves. Also, when someone wants to look for old files, I need to find them for them and register them."
"Normally... you're the only one here."
"But it's okay, I can come over and drop by occasionally to keep you company!"
Nie Xiguang looked around the room filled with old things.
This place is completely different from the working life she had imagined.
It was a completely different world from the finance department where she used to work.
This place seems to hold all the company's past, and it's also where she'll start her new job.
"I understand," she said to Yin Jie. "Thank you for bringing me here. I'll take a look by myself first."
Yin Jie patted her on the shoulder, gave her a "good luck" look, and then quietly closed the door and left.
The moment the door closed, all sound was shut out. The archives became eerily quiet, a quietness that was almost unsettling.
Nie Xiguang walked to the window and looked down at the factory area.
Cars and small workers were coming and going below.
Far away, Yu Chen is probably in the workshop right now discussing some technical issue with Hua Xiangyang.
But she herself is here, with these silent files.
It would be a lie to say I'm not disappointed at all; I do feel a bit empty inside.
But she remembered what Yu Chen had said. He said it was just a job transfer, not a dismissal. He also said that Lin Yusen might have his reasons for doing this.
She walked to the nearest filing cabinet, casually opened a drawer, and took out a folder.
This is a contract from more than two years ago.
It is a purchase contract signed between the company and an equipment supplier.
She opened it and read through the pages one by one.
She suddenly realized that when she was in the finance department, she only cared about how much money she would have to pay in the end and whether the invoices were correct.
She had never looked at a contract so thoroughly before.
This document outlines the technical standards to be met, how to inspect the goods upon arrival, who is responsible if any problems arise, and how after-sales service is guaranteed. All these terms together constitute what a complete business transaction should look like.
Maybe... I can really learn something different here?
She put the folder back and walked to another cabinet.
The cabinet was labeled "Project Minutes".
One of the drawers was a bit tight. She pulled on it, but couldn't open it. She used a little more force and pulled it again.
Just then, the door to the archives was pushed open from the outside.
Nie Xiguang turned around and froze.
Lin Yusen stood at the door. He was dressed in a neat, dark gray suit.
His gaze fell calmly on her, his face expressionless.
He was holding a black folder in his hand.
How did he end up here?
"President Lin." Nie Xiguang quickly stood up straight.
Lin Yusen walked in, his footsteps very light.
He first looked at the rows of filing cabinets in the room before turning his gaze back to Nie Xiguang's face.
"Are you getting used to it?" he asked, his voice as aloof as ever.
"Adapting, getting used to it." Nie Xiguang's lips twitched.
Can she say she's not used to it?
"Archival work is the foundation of company operations."
History doesn't speak, but the records it leaves behind do. Understanding these records is sometimes more important than participating in the present.
His words had a deeper meaning, but Nie Xiguang was unsure what he was referring to.
Nie Xiguang looked up, for the first time not avoiding Lin Yusen's gaze, and said, "President Lin asked me to calm down, learn, and reflect here, and I will do as he says."
Lin Yusen met her gaze for two seconds, a barely perceptible ripple flashing in his eyes.
"Very good." He looked away, tapped the stuck drawer with his knuckles, and said, "The drawer slides need lubricating. Register it and report it to the maintenance department." He then turned and left.
Nie Xiguang stood still, feeling pressured by the eye contact they had just made.
She returned to the archives and suddenly saw a document...
"2010-2011 Major Supplier Qualification Audit and Evaluation Report"
Nie Xiguang's heart suddenly started beating faster.
---
Nie Xiguang spent the entire afternoon organizing files.
Lin Yusen reappeared that evening.
He came to review the purchase contracts and supplier information.
The only sound in the air was the rustling of paper turning.
After a while, Lin Yusen closed a thick file in his hand, his brows furrowed, as if he hadn't found what he was looking for.
"Mr. Lin, are you looking for the purchase contract for polysilicon wafers between our company and Xinya Materials?"
Nie Xiguang suddenly thought of the disgusting face of General Manager Mo from the purchasing department and assumed that Lin Yusen had come to find something to use against him.
Lin Yusen paused, turned to look at her, and said nothing.
"I saw it this afternoon when I was organizing the old files in the technical department. It was stored separately in the third cabinet. Would you like me to get it for you?"
Lin Yusen's gaze shifted from scrutiny to inquiry.
"You remember it very clearly."
Nie Xiguang was a little embarrassed by the praise, and touched his nose, "I have a pretty good memory. I can remember the general location and key points of what I've read."
These words took on a different meaning when they reached Lin Yusen's ears.
The surprise and inquiry from before froze instantly, replaced by a cold and sharp scrutiny.
"Good memory?" Lin Yusen's lips curled into a cold smile. "Perfect, there's a job that needs someone with a good memory and meticulousness like you."
A sense of foreboding rose in Nie Xiguang's heart.
"Since you're so familiar with the company's procurement contracts, why don't you compile a systematic report?" Lin Yusen's tone was calm but brooked no argument. "From the company's founding in 2005, you need a comparison table of the purchase prices, suppliers, and average market prices for all major photovoltaic raw materials during the same period."
Listen to what kind of talk this is!
Nie Xiguang's eyes widened.
Data from 2005 to the present, nearly 7 years.
Is this an attempt to kill me?
"President Lin, this... the amount of data is too large, and many early files may be incomplete..." Nie Xiguang subconsciously wanted to refuse.
Lin Yusen interrupted her, his tone leaving no room for negotiation, "I believe in you. This is definitely not difficult for you."
He emphasized the word "certainly," and the coldness in his eyes was almost freezing.
After saying that, he gave Nie Xiguang no chance to explain or ask any questions. He took the few documents he had just found, turned around, and strode away from the archives.
Feeling wronged, Nie Xiguang stood there, still clutching the unfinished file card in her hand.
She just wanted to help, so why did she get a task that was difficult for her?
This is clearly a punishment.
Lin Yusen, are you sick?!
---
At the same time, Yu Chen had just finished a video conference with a client in Zhejiang.
He rubbed his temples, preparing to check the stock market closing bell, when a system notification sounded:
[A key plot point has been detected.]
[New Side Quest Released: The Silent Battlefield]
[Objective: To assist Nie Xiguang in identifying and definitively linking at least one key information chain pointing to abnormal operations within the purchasing department during the data processing process.]
[Reward: 1500 Achievement Points]
Yu Chen picked up his teacup, walked to the window, and looked towards the Shuangyuan factory area.
The place was brightly lit in the night.
The archives room indeed became a battlefield.
He took a sip of tea.
Lin Yusen, what do you have to compete with me on?
