Chapter 147 Wei Donghai's Visit
Chapter 147 Wei Donghai's Visit
The voice was loud and clear; it was a man's voice.
Qin Rushan raised an eyebrow and put down the comb in his hand: "Who's so clueless this early in the morning?"
Li Xianglian recognized the voice and gave him a push: "Go quickly, I'm looking for you."
Qin Rushan then slowly strolled out to open the door.
As soon as the large iron gate opened, Wei Donghai, dressed in plain clothes and carrying a briefcase, stood at the door.
He glanced into the courtyard, at the pomegranate tree, the red brick house, and the neatly maintained yard, and couldn't help but click his tongue twice.
"Wow, Old Qin, that's quick on you. Just two days ago you were eating dirt in the village, and now you're living in a capitalist's mansion? There aren't many places like this in the whole county, are there?"
Wei Donghai didn't stand on ceremony. He strode in, threw his briefcase on the stone table, poured himself a glass of cold water, and gulped it down.
"Enough with the nonsense. You wouldn't come here without a reason." Qin Rushan handed him a cigarette, lit one for himself, and asked, "How's that butcher surnamed Zhang doing?"
When serious matters were mentioned, Wei Donghai's playful expression disappeared, and his demeanor became serious.
He wiped the water from his mouth and lowered his voice: "He's a tough nut to crack. He was in there for three days, and his mouth was tighter than a clam shell. He kept saying that he was a legitimate pig butcher and that the money he earned was from saving up."
Just then, Li Xianglian came out carrying the washed fruit and overheard these words, causing her heart to tighten.
That butcher Zhang was her nightmare. If she couldn't kill him this time, there would probably be more trouble in the future.
"And then what happened?" Li Xianglian put down the plate and couldn't help but ask.
"Don't worry, sister-in-law." Wei Donghai smiled at Li Xianglian. "In our criminal investigation team, there's no one whose mouth we can't pry open. That bastard's psychological defenses have collapsed."
Wei Donghai flicked his cigarette ash: "We investigated his underground slaughterhouse and dug out a hidden compartment under the blood pool. Good heavens, not only was there money, but also a lot of old items, and even a few remittance slips from unknown sources. We slammed these things in front of him and told him that this was called having a huge amount of unexplained wealth, and that he might get shot. That bastard wet his pants on the spot."
"Confessed everything?" A ruthless glint flashed in Qin Rushan's eyes.
"He confessed."
Wei Donghai nodded. "This kid is definitely not clean. Besides forced buying and selling and market manipulation, he also dealt in cultural relics with a bunch of hooligans a few years ago. What's worse, he was responsible for the disappearance of a pig dealer from out of town the year before last. His body was buried in that mass grave in the west of the city, and our people have already gone to dig it up."
Upon hearing this, Li Xianglian turned pale with fright and almost dropped the apple in her hand.
That seemingly fierce butcher Zhang actually had a murder charge against him!
If I hadn't run away back then, if I had stayed in the Zhang family, what would have happened...?
A warm, large hand grasped her cold fingers.
Qin Rushan didn't look at her, but instead gently stroked the back of her hand with his thumb, his gaze fixed on Wei Donghai: "Are you sure you can nail it shut?"
"The chain of evidence is conclusive. This time, he'll be lucky to spend the rest of his life in jail. He's got a murder on his hands, so he'll most likely be shot."
Wei Donghai's tone was chilling, "Old Qin, this cancer has been completely removed. From now on, your sister-in-law can walk with her head held high in the county town, and no one will dare to use the past to disgust people anymore."
Qin Rushan's taut jawline finally relaxed.
He took a deep drag of his cigarette and slowly exhaled, as if trying to expel the last bit of stale air from his chest.
"Thanks, Lao Wei," Qin Rushan said in a deep voice. "I'll remember this favor."
"It's too far-fetched for us brothers to talk about this."
Wei Donghai waved his hand, took out a document from his bag and waved it, "And you deserve credit for solving this big case. The bureau was just looking for a role model, and by cracking down on this criminal gang during the 'Strike Hard' campaign, I've really made a name for myself." This would be very beneficial for his promotion.
He had been in the position of deputy captain for several years without being promoted, and this case just happened to be sent to him in time.
The two men understood each other without saying a word.
After the matter was explained, the atmosphere immediately relaxed considerably.
Once Li Xianglian had calmed down, the huge weight in her heart finally lifted.
Looking at the two men in front of her, one a righteous policeman and the other her husband who was protecting her, she felt that there was more hope for the future.
"Brother Wei, now that you're here, don't leave."
Li Xianglian's face regained its gentle smile, and she adopted the air of a hostess. "We've just moved to a new house, so the pots and pans are all ready. You and Brother Shan chat, I'll go buy two pounds of meat and cook a few of my signature dishes. We can have a couple of drinks under this pomegranate tree!"
Upon hearing this, Wei Donghai's eyes lit up. He patted his stomach and laughed, "That's great! I've heard Old Qin boast about how good your cooking is, so I'll have to try it today. But don't make anything too complicated, just prepare some snacks to go with the drinks. This stubborn mule and I will have a good celebratory drink!"
"Okay, you guys chat, I'll be right there."
Li Xianglian took off her apron and turned to walk out.
"etc."
Qin Rushan stopped her, pulled out a handful of banknotes and coupons from his pocket, and stuffed them into her hand. "Don't be stingy. Buy a live fish, and then go to the supply and marketing cooperative to get a bottle of good wine. While you're at it, see if there are any snacks you like. Buy whatever you want."
"Okay, rich man." Li Xianglian glared at him, then happily took the money and went out.
Watching Li Xianglian's graceful figure disappear outside the door, Wei Donghai withdrew his gaze, nudged Qin Rushan with his elbow, and looked on with a mocking expression.
"Well done, Lao Qin. You used to be known as the cold-faced devil in the company, who would have thought you'd become such a henpecked husband? I bet all your money is in your wife's hands, isn't it?"
Qin Rushan stubbed out his cigarette on the blue brick beneath his feet, a smug smile playing on his lips—a genuine display of pride.
"You bachelor, what do you know? Money is meant for your wife to spend. If she manages the money, that's called accumulating wealth. As for you, now that this case is solved, keep an eye on that line to the south. I always felt that this Zhang guy was just a small fry. Who could he sell those artifacts to? There's more to this than meets the eye."
Wei Donghai's expression turned serious, and he nodded: "I was just about to tell you this. You're a well-informed driver, so please keep an eye out for me. But speaking of which, now that you have such a large and successful business, are you really not considering coming to the bureau to help me? It's a legitimate, secure job."
Qin Rushan shook his head, his gaze sweeping across the large courtyard, his eyes resolute.
"Nothing beats a secure job. The policy has changed, and things are about to get better. I need to take advantage of this opportunity to earn a fortune for my wife."
