Chapter 44 Acquitted in Court
Chapter 44 Acquitted in Court
"Big brother, should we go and kill him right now?"
Ah Bao pulled a Black Star pistol from his waist.
Lu Peng calmed down for a moment, then said, "Let him live a little longer."
Once a gun is used, it's no small matter; the police will relentlessly pursue the case.
Qi Tongwei went downstairs to the front desk and happened to run into Chief Dai from the nearby police station.
The receptionist immediately said, "Officer, he's the one causing trouble."
Director Dai noticed that Qi Tongwei had injuries on his face and that his clothes looked like those of the procuratorate.
"Show me your ID. What are you doing here?"
Qi Tongwei took out his prosecutor's badge. "Officer, I'm Qi Tongwei from the procuratorate. I'm here today to ask Lu Peng about something."
Director Dai was stunned for a moment. This was the living devil of the procuratorate. The criminal police captain was sent to the detention center by him, and the captain of the public security brigade was suspended from his duties for investigation.
"We received a report of a fight. What happened to your head injury?"
Qi Tongwei didn't want to continue the argument. "Officer, I'm in a hurry to get back and report to Director He. I'll take my leave now. If you need anything, you can come directly to the procuratorate to find me."
Director Dai thought for a moment, realizing he couldn't afford to offend this ruthless man, and said, "You can go now. We'll contact you if anything comes up."
"Thank you, officer."
The receptionist was surprised to learn that Qi Tongwei was actually a prosecutor, and that he was even more ruthless than the nightclub security guards.
"Chief, why did you let this kid go?"
"What do you know? Go in and check it out."
As a grassroots leader, Director Dai still has his own information channels. Qi Tongwei might be one of Secretary Xu's men, and he doesn't want to cause trouble for himself.
After leaving the Jinhao Nightclub, Qi Tongwei rode a secondhand motorcycle to a nearby hospital to clean the wound on his forehead, and then rushed to the Jingzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau.
What's wrong with you, kid?
Zhao Donglai pointed to the wound on Qi Tongwei's forehead.
Qi Tongwei said domineeringly, "It's just a minor injury. I got bitten by a dog sent by Lu Peng today, and I took him down to his lair."
"Damn, you're tough as nails. Rumor has it that anyone who dares to cause trouble at the Golden Mansion Nightclub will either have their arms or legs broken, or they'll simply disappear."
Qi Tongwei was speechless. "You're a policeman, and you're afraid of these monsters and demons? You're really something else."
Zhao Donglai laughed and said, "I'm just a lowly policeman. Lu Peng has a lot of influence. I'm not as fierce as you."
"I'm too lazy to waste my breath on you. Is Director He here?"
Zhao Donglai was taken aback. "Damn it, when did Director He become someone you could just see whenever you wanted?"
"Stop talking nonsense, I'm not talking to you anymore."
You're awesome.
Zhao Donglai gave a thumbs up and led Qi Tongwei to He Aijun's office.
He Aijun was puzzled when he saw that Qi Tongwei had a head injury.
"You got into a fight, kid."
Qi Tongwei chuckled, "I had a big fight with Lu Peng's henchmen, but it's alright, I wasn't the one who suffered a loss."
He Aijun's expression turned serious. "Tell me quickly, what happened? Attacking a prosecutor? These people are too arrogant!"
Qi Tongwei quickly took a tape recorder out of his briefcase.
"Director He, listen to this first."
Qi Tongwei placed the tape recorder in the space and recorded his conversation with Lu Peng at the Jinhao Nightclub.
After hearing this, He Aijun's face turned angry.
"This Lu Peng is too arrogant; does he even respect the police?"
Qi Tongwei said seriously, "Director He, Lu Peng won't let Duan Xiaojun off the hook. Please make a call to the police station in Duan Xiaojun's hometown."
"Don't worry about that, kid. If Lu Peng dares to commit a crime, the police will investigate thoroughly and never let any bad guy get away with it."
Lu Peng's words were not just arrogant; they were a challenge to the entire police station, which He Aijun could not tolerate.
Qi Tongwei chuckled, "Director He, I risked my life to get this recording, so don't leak it."
He Aijun understood what Qi Tongwei meant, "Do you see everyone as a bad guy, and yourself as the only good one?"
"Director He, you're wronging me. I found you immediately."
"At least you have some conscience. You like fighting so much, should I transfer you to the police station?"
He Aijun wasn't just being polite; he genuinely had this idea. A skilled police officer is crucial for catching criminals.
Qi Tongwei thought for a moment, "Director He, I'm doing a good job right now, we can talk about it later."
"Then I'll save a spot for you, kid."
"Thank you, Director He."
After leaving the municipal bureau, Qi Tongwei took his used motorcycle to a repair shop. The handlebars were bent, and some of the bodywork was cracked.
After the repairs were completed, I returned to the prosecutor's office just before closing time.
"Qi Tongwei, you've gotten into a fight again."
Gao Qi was surprised when he saw the injury on his head.
Qi Tongwei laughed and said, "What's the big deal? What kind of man doesn't have some injuries?"
"Qi Tongwei, your words are a big blow to everyone. Only petty thugs fight every day," Gao Qi retorted.
"You're right, you're right."
Qi Tongwei was too lazy to waste words with him.
This really spurred Gao Qi on.
"Qi Tongwei, I need to educate you on something: prosecutors rely on their brains, not their fists."
"Gao Qi, don't you dare push your luck, get out of here."
When Qi Tongwei got angry, Gao Qi immediately backed down.
Shortly after, the court called to announce the verdict in Duan Xiaojun's case the following morning.
That evening, Qi Tongwei shamelessly accompanied Qin Xue for a run in the park.
Qin Xue stopped running after about ten minutes.
"What's wrong? Something's on your mind?"
Qi Tongwei quickly asked:
Qin Xue wiped the sweat from her face with a tissue and gave one to Qi Tongwei as well.
"Don't let the wound get infected."
Hearing a caring word from an icy beauty is no less than detonating a nuclear bomb over the head of a Japanese soldier.
"With you saying that, there's no way I'll get infected."
Qin Xue didn't give him any more chances to push his luck and went straight back to her dormitory, leaving Qi Tongwei alone, bewildered in the wind.
He wanted to slap himself across the face. "Did he think he was funny?"
The next day, Qi Tongwei wore a handsome blue suit.
Outside the court, many reporters arrived early. This was big news; police coercion and wrongful convictions were certainly sensational.
First Criminal Court.
Duan Xiaojun stood nervously in the dock. Only if the court declared him innocent would he be truly innocent; otherwise, he would never be able to hold his head high again.
Today's courtroom has only one protagonist: Duan Xiaojun.
The presiding judge began to pronounce the verdict.
"Given the new evidence that has emerged, the court has ruled that Duan Xiaojun is not guilty of murder and has been released immediately."
"I am deeply sorry for the physical and mental harm caused to Duan Xiaojun due to the police's mistake."
"Duan Xiaojun, from today onwards you are a free man, an innocent man, and you have the right to apply for state compensation."
After the court pronounced its verdict, Duan Xiaojun could no longer control his emotions and burst into tears.
He lost his wife and almost lost his life. How can he explain to his young child that his mother is gone?
Looking at this people's hero who crawled out of a pile of dead bodies, Qi Tongwei knew that his future life would still be full of thorns and hardships.
Qi Tongwei accompanied Duan Xiaojun out of the courtroom, where reporters swarmed around them, including Ye Xuan, whom he knew well.
