Chapter 194 First time substituting for Severus in Defense Against the Dark Arts class
When the Gryffindor students returned from Hogsmeade, they were horrified to find that the Fat Lady in the mural at the entrance to their dormitory was gone.
The spot where the fat lady once stood is now just a blank space, and the surrounding murals have been severely damaged.
Numerous scratches appeared on the mural, revealing the stone wall below, as if it had been scratched by the claws of some animal.
The portrait of the fat lady was torn up, and her whereabouts were unknown, which inevitably brought to mind her kind smile and gentle voice.
The students gathered around, their faces filled with shock and anger.
Some began to speculate whether some evil force had invaded Hogwarts, while others worried about the Fat Lady's safety.
Soon, they found the fat lady in a corner. She looked very frightened and uneasy.
Harry and his friends tried to comfort her, but she was still shaken.
Just then, Headmaster Dumbledore appeared.
He saw that the portrait of the fat lady had been torn and asked what had happened.
The fat lady told Headmaster Dumbledore, "It was Sirius Black who did it."
Headmaster Dumbledore's expression turned very serious upon hearing the fat lady's words.
To prevent the students from being harmed, Dumbledore immediately ordered the school to be locked down, allowing the students to rest and be managed together in the lobby.
Instruct every professor to search every corner of the school for any trace of Sirius Black.
Headmaster Dumbledore and Severus suspected that one of the teachers might be Black's mole.
Harry, who happened to be nearby, overheard part of their conversation.
As someone who knew the inside story, I simply slept quietly. I knew that Sirius Black was no longer in the school; he had already left Hogwarts through the secret passage.
Time flies, and autumn is here in no time. Professor Lupin is on leave for a few days, and Severus is taking over as his substitute teacher. Today, he even asked me to come and teach with him. It's really an honor for me.
Severus and I walked into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom together, and the students' eyes immediately turned to us.
I simply smiled slightly at a few familiar people.
Severus walked onto the stage expressionlessly, while I stood to the side.
He began the lesson in his deep, magnetic voice: "Students, today we will learn some advanced black magic defense techniques." His eyes were sharp, as if he could see into the hearts of every student.
Severus explained the various defensive spells and techniques in detail, his demonstrations precise and powerful.
The students listened intently, not daring to slack off in the slightest.
I observed the students' reactions from the sidelines, offering them guidance and encouragement from time to time.
Harry and his friends performed exceptionally well, actively participating in class activities and demonstrating a strong interest in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
This was probably the only time Severus didn't make things difficult for them by deducting points.
At the end of the course, Severus arranged a practical exercise. The students were divided into groups and cast defensive spells on each other.
The entire classroom was filled with a tense and intense atmosphere.
The bell rang, and Severus ended his class.
The students left the classroom one after another, their faces showing satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.
Severus and I exchanged a glance, both satisfied with the outcome of the lesson.
"Is there a reason why Severus brought me to class?" I originally just went to Severus to ask him to exempt me from my homework this semester, but I didn't expect him to bring me to the Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
“I just wanted to see how good you are at Defense Against the Dark Arts,” Severus said to me as he packed his things.
"What, you want me to cover your classes?" I joked with Severus.
"Hmm." I didn't expect that Severus really thought the same way.
"Seriously? You want me to do the hard labor?" I looked at Severus in surprise. Wasn't he always eager to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts? Now he doesn't want to teach it and wants me to teach it?
“I think you’re a good fit. Why don’t you come and teach a few classes and see how it goes?” Severus didn’t seem to be joking; he really was considering it.
"Does Headmaster Albus Dumbledore know about what you've done?" I wondered what the headmaster would say if he knew about Severus's actions.
“He’s more accepting than I am; he has complete faith that you can take Remus Lupin’s place in teaching the young wizards.” Severus had indeed revealed something even more outrageous this time.
"I really appreciate your trust." I was speechless at my brother's partner; it was like hiring a professor who was unpredictable and didn't need a salary as a substitute.
"Then why don't you become Remus Lupin's substitute professor? After all, you know his health condition; he has his period a few days every month."
Severus picked up his textbook and looked at me intently.
"What about my classes? Will there be any conflicts?" I agreed to cover the class, but what about my own classes? What should I do?
“Your professors agreed very quickly. They said that even if you don’t attend classes, you can still keep up with your studies. They’re letting you skip their classes unconditionally.” Severus said this as we walked and talked.
"Thank you so much for your trust, professors of every subject. You've all arranged everything for me. I guess I'll have to take over as the acting professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts." It's true, I can solve a problem for me just by asking a question. Wasn't this exactly what they were waiting for?
These people were well-prepared; even Severus was in cahoots with them.
And just like that, without even realizing it, the young wizards found out that I had become a substitute professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts, and then the young wizards all over the school knew about it.
"Ayers, have you really become Professor Lupin's substitute professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts?" Of course, the first person to ask me after receiving the message was Fred.
I had barely arrived in the hall when he pulled me down to sit and asked me questions.
“If there isn’t anyone in Hogwarts with the same name as me, then it must be me,” I replied to Fred’s question with a smile.
"Wow, that's cool! You're really something, Ayers!" George chimed in.
"That's really amazing, Ayers." Percy was also happy for me; this acting professorship was a sign of his approval.
“Ayers, you really are the first student who is also a prefect and a substitute professor,” Cedric said to me with a smile.
"That's really true, Ayers. If you graduate like this, you'll be able to apply to become a professor right away." For Oliver, who is about to graduate, it's like he's already planning what to do after graduation while still studying.
"If that's really possible, I think becoming a professor after graduation would be a good idea." Hearing Oliver's suggestion, I thought I could consider it; becoming a professor didn't seem so bad.
