Chapter 289 We Can't Let Baby Down
Chapter 289 We Can't Let Baby Down
These past few days, the Jiang Group has been mentioned everywhere. Since everyone knows about this, why not just go directly to Jiang Yichen?
Thinking of this, I quickly made an excuse to go out and send a message to Jiang Yichen.
In the evening, Xu Sisi was worried and waited for me outside.
Seeing me come out, she looked worried and said, "Are you alright? This dinner party today doesn't seem as simple as it appears."
"You guessed right, it seems they're all heading towards the Jiang Group."
Upon hearing this, Xu Sisi immediately understood.
It turns out she had already done her research. Some of the directors here were ostensibly there for the dinner, but they already had plenty of collaborations with top streamers elsewhere. Mutual benefit was not impossible, but after hearing what I said, she realized that their target was Jiang Yichen.
"Okay, I understand. The most important thing right now is to wait for Jiang Yichen's reply."
After saying that, I composed myself and prepared to calmly face the challenges ahead.
A calculating smile flickered across President Wen's gold-rimmed nose: "You're back."
"Yes, I just spoke with my assistant and explained a few things. I'll treat you to dinner next time we discuss cooperation."
He nodded, but didn't continue what I was saying.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the banquet hall, dusk was falling.
Just then, Jiang Yichen's message arrived.
"These people are up to no good, so be careful. I'll deal with them when I'm done with this."
"I see."
Those few words made my tense shoulders relax a little.
My fingertips unconsciously caressed my slightly protruding belly, where a gentle fetal movement was coming from, as if soothing my emotions.
I looked up and saw several directors walking towards us. The one in the lead, Director Chen, had a fake smile on his face and was holding a glass of red wine. I quickly stuffed my phone back into my bag and adjusted my posture.
"Mrs. Jiang, why are you sitting here all alone?"
I looked at the man in front of me and remembered that Xu Sisi had shown me a photo before; it was Director Chen.
Director Chen sat down on the sofa opposite me, and the other directors also took their seats, forming a semi-encircling arrangement.
I picked up the glass of warm water in front of me and smiled faintly: "You're quite far along in your pregnancy, it's easy to get tired standing for long periods."
"That's true, how could President Jiang bear to let you attend such an occasion alone?"
Director Chen swirled his wine glass meaningfully, "I heard he's been busy with overseas acquisitions lately?"
I took a sip of water, the warm liquid sliding down my throat: "Uncle Chen is really well-informed."
"Not to be rude, but President Jiang is young and impetuous, and his actions are inevitably radical," Director Wang interjected. "We old-timers are also thinking about the company's best interests."
I put down my water glass and gently tapped the rim with my fingertips: "What do you uncles and elders mean?"
“We hope to have a good talk with President Jiang.” Director Chen leaned forward. “After all, the company doesn’t belong to him alone, and we should listen to everyone’s opinions.”
Just then, the banquet hall doors were suddenly pushed open.
A gust of cold wind swept in, and I looked up to see Jiang Yichen striding in. He was wearing a black bespoke suit, his tie slightly loose, clearly having rushed over.
"What do you uncles and elders want to talk to me about?" His voice was not loud, but it instantly silenced the entire banquet hall.
I watched him walk towards me, and the moment he bent down to kiss my forehead, I smelled his familiar fragrance.
He placed his warm palm on my lower abdomen and asked softly, "Are you alright?"
I nodded, watching him straighten up and turn to face the board members. He had one hand in his pocket and the other resting on the back of my chair, his posture languid yet exuding an undeniable sense of authority.
"Since everyone's here, why don't we talk now?" He smirked. "Perfect timing, I also have something to announce."
The crystal chandelier in the banquet hall cast dappled light and shadow on Director Chen's face, which turned from red to green, and finally settled on a sickly pale color.
The wine glass in my hand trembled slightly, and the red wine left streaks on the glass.
"Jiang Yichen," his voice seemed to be squeezed out from between his teeth, "are you trying to wipe us out completely?"
Jiang Yichen calmly took out a fountain pen from the inside pocket of his suit, the metal body gleaming coldly under the light.
"Uncle Chen, who did you meet in Qing City on the 18th of last month? Do you need me to remind you?"
Director Chen's hand trembled violently, spilling red wine onto his expensive custom-made suit. I noticed his pupils contract sharply, and beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
“You…” His voice suddenly became hoarse.
“Thirty million.” Jiang Yichen’s voice remained calm. “You misappropriated thirty million to cover your son’s gambling debts in Macau. This money was taken from the research and development funds for the new energy project, wasn’t it?”
Jiang Yichen's voice wasn't loud in the banquet hall. I instinctively protected my lower abdomen, feeling a slight fetal movement. Jiang Yichen's gaze swept over me, his eyes softening momentarily, but returning to their sharpness when he looked back at Director Chen.
Director Wang stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor with a harsh screech: "That's slander!"
"Really?" Jiang Yichen took a tablet from his assistant. "This contains CCTV footage of your son at the Macau casino, as well as his bank statements. Would you like me to project it onto the big screen now?"
Director Li suddenly laughed, the sound particularly jarring in the silent banquet hall. He took off his glasses and carefully wiped them with the hem of his suit jacket: "Xiao Jiang, you played that move brilliantly. But have you considered that if you get rid of all us old guys, leaving only you on the board, how will you command respect?"
Jiang Yichen smiled as well. He walked to the French windows and drew back the heavy curtains. In the night, the Jiang Group building was brightly lit: "Uncle Li, look, how many young people are waiting for their opportunities in that building? They understand better than we do what this era needs."
As he turned around, he said, "I'm not trying to drive you away; I'm making way for the younger generation. Over the years, the company has been controlled by you, and we've missed so many opportunities for transformation..."
Director Chen suddenly slumped onto the sofa, as if all his strength had been drained away: "You planned this all along, didn't you? From the day you took over the company..."
“No,” Jiang Yichen interrupted him, “it started the day you began obstructing the new energy project.” He walked to my side and gently took my hand. “After my wife became pregnant, I started thinking about what kind of future I wanted to give her and our child. A Jiang Group that is stuck in its ways, or a Jiang Group that dares to innovate?”
Director Li put on his glasses and looked at us with a complicated expression: "You are more ruthless than we imagined."
“No,” Jiang Yichen shook his head.
After the final agreement was signed, Jiang Yichen helped me out of the banquet hall. A night breeze blew by, carrying the chill unique to early spring. He took off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders, placing his hand on my slightly protruding belly: "Did you scare the baby today?"
I leaned against him, listening to his strong heartbeat: "You knew they would come all along?"
“Hmm,” he lowered his head and kissed the top of my head, “but I didn’t expect them to choose an occasion where you were also present. I’m sorry to have startled you.”
I shook my head, feeling the slight movement in my belly: "You know what? The baby just kicked me, as if to say, 'Daddy is so amazing.'"
He chuckled softly, a sound that seemed especially warm in the night: "Then I need to work even harder, I can't let our baby down."
