Chapter 265 I'm so useless
Chapter 265 I'm so useless
"What are you doing?" My voice was particularly clear in the empty office.
She shuddered, and her phone fell to the ground. The screen was still lit, displaying the safe's combination keypad.
"I...I..." she hurriedly picked up her phone.
"I want to help Sisi organize the documents..."
"Mr. Gu, please don't be angry." Aunt Zhang appeared at the door at some point.
"Little Li meant well..."
I stared at them, memories flooding back. Li, the pregnant woman, was always the last to leave work; Aunt Zhang often cleaned near the finance office; and those deliberately ingratiating gestures...
Three days later, someone from the tax bureau called.
"Someone reported your company for issuing false invoices."
I opened the file; it was a scanned copy of the company's ledger from the previous quarter, clearly showing several non-existent transactions. Looking up at the glass wall, I saw that Li Wan's workstation was empty.
I was stunned: "Tax evasion? That's impossible!"
I took a deep breath and said to Xu Sisi, "I'm going to the tax bureau. You guys continue working."
Xu Sisi looked at me worriedly: "Sister Mo, do you want me to go with you?"
"No need, the innocent will be innocent."
Suddenly, the folder in my hand fell to the ground with a "thud." The recent pressure had already left me physically and mentally exhausted, and at that moment I felt dizzy.
Xu Sisi, her face pale, added, "They said they'd be here soon, they should be arriving almost now."
I forced myself to stand up, but then felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen.
"We'll be waiting for you in the conference room."
Xu Sisi noticed my unusual expression. "Miss Gu, you look terrible, would you like to..."
Before I could finish speaking, I was already doubled over in pain, cold sweat streaming down my forehead. Xu Sisi quickly supported me: "Call an ambulance!"
Jiang Yichen was outside when his phone suddenly vibrated. He didn't want to answer it, but when he saw it was Xu Sisi calling, his heart tightened for no reason.
"Mr. Jiang, Miss Gu, she..." The voice on the other end of the phone was choked with sobs.
He jumped up, slamming his chair to the floor: "What happened to her?"
"Sudden abdominal pain, I've already called an ambulance..."
He couldn't hear what was said after that. As he rushed out of the conference room, his secretary chased after him: "Mr. Jiang, there's another one in ten minutes..."
"Cancel!" he practically shouted.
The elevator was too slow, so he rushed into the emergency exit. He ran down the stairs, taking three steps at a time, not even bothering to grab his suit jacket. In the underground parking garage, he practically threw himself into the driver's seat, his hands shaking so badly he almost couldn't insert the key.
He ran three red lights along the way. His hands gripping the steering wheel were bulging with veins, and his back was soaked with cold sweat. My pale face and her recent tired appearance kept flashing through my mind.
"Damn it!" He slammed his fist on the steering wheel. He shouldn't have let her carry so much alone.
"Gu Mo! Where is Gu Mo?" His voice was trembling.
Waves of pain washed over me, and I gripped Xu Sisi's arm tightly. In a daze, I heard her anxious voice and the sound of hurried footsteps. Someone picked me up, and I smelled a familiar cologne scent—it was Jiang Yichen.
"Momo, hang in there." His voice was filled with extreme anxiety.
The ambulance siren pierced the air. I lay on the stretcher, feeling my consciousness fading. Jiang Yichen held my hand the whole time; his palms were sweaty.
Upon arriving at the hospital, I was wheeled into the emergency room. Under the blinding white light, the busy figures of the doctors flickered before my eyes.
"The fetal heart rate is normal, and the contractions are not obvious," the doctor said after the examination. "It may be Braxton Hicks contractions caused by excessive pressure. I recommend hospitalization for observation."
I breathed a sigh of relief, and tears involuntarily streamed down my face. Just then, Jiang Yichen rushed in, not even having had time to put on his suit jacket, and his tie was askew.
"Doctor, how is she?" he asked breathlessly.
"The fetus is fine," the doctor said, removing his mask. "However, the pregnant woman needs to rest well and shouldn't be subjected to any more stimulation."
Jiang Yichen finally breathed a sigh of relief and walked to my bedside. He reached out and wiped away the tears on my face with unbelievably gentle movements.
"I'm sorry," I said, choking back tears. "I'm so useless..."
"Don't say that." He held my hand. "It's my fault for not protecting you."
Just then, my phone rang. It was my grandma calling. Jiang Yichen glanced at the caller ID: "Should I answer it?"
I shook my head: "Don't worry Grandma."
He nodded and hung up the phone for me. Only then did I notice that the back of his shirt was soaked with sweat; he had obviously run there.
"The tax bureau..." I hesitated before speaking.
“Never mind that,” he interrupted me. “The most important thing now is you and the child.”
The nurse came in to give me an IV drip, and Jiang Yichen stayed by my bedside the whole time. As night deepened, he gently patted my hand, like he was soothing a child.
“Go to sleep,” he whispered. “I’m here.”
I closed my eyes, but couldn't fall asleep. Recent events flashed through my mind: Li's unusual behavior, the Jin family's actions, and that mysterious man…
"Yichen," I said softly, "I don't think things are that simple."
"I know." He tucked the blanket around me.
"Once you're better, we'll find out the truth together."
I nodded, finally feeling a sense of relief.
After a few days, I went to the tax bureau to submit additional documents. I was taken to an office. The staff member took out a stack of documents: "Ms. Gu, this is the evidence provided by the whistleblower. Please explain it to me."
I examined the documents closely, my expression growing increasingly grim: "These data are fabricated! Our studio's accounts have always been crystal clear; there's absolutely no way there could be a problem!"
The staff member frowned: "But the whistleblower provided detailed evidence, and we need to investigate further."
Just then, the office door was pushed open, and Jiang Yichen strode in: "I am Gu Mo's husband and her lawyer. What evidence do you have to prove that she evaded taxes?"
The staff member paused for a moment, then said, "Mr. Jiang, we're just following procedure..."
"Procedure?" Jiang Yichen sneered. "Interrogating my wife without any solid evidence, is this your procedure?"
The staff member looked somewhat embarrassed: "Mr. Jiang, we also received a report..."
"Who is the whistleblower?" Jiang Yichen interrupted him. "Please provide the whistleblower's information, otherwise I have the right to suspect that this is a malicious accusation."
The staff looked at each other, and finally compromised: "Ms. Gu, you can go back first, but we need to investigate further."
On the way home, I leaned on Jiang Yichen's shoulder and closed my eyes wearily: "Yichen, I really didn't..."
“I know,” Jiang Yichen gently hugged me, “I know best what kind of person you are.”
He lowered his head and kissed my forehead: "You should rest well these few days. I'll handle things at the studio. Honey, you've really been working hard lately!"
"OK then!"
I nodded, nestled in his arms, and slowly fell asleep.
For the next few days, I was forced to stay home and rest. I called Xu Sisi and Xiaotiantian every day to check on the studio's situation.
"Sister Mo," Xu Sisi said on the phone, "the tax bureau is here to audit the accounts again, but our accounts are clear, and they won't find anything."
I breathed a sigh of relief: "That's good."
