Chapter 711 The Strange Snape
Crabbe and Goyle ran away, leaving Hogwarts without looking back, having failed to kill Siron and already exposed themselves.
It seems unlikely that the two of them will return to class after the holiday ends.
Xiren showed no obvious disappointment or anger at the result, remaining quite calm.
Crabbe and Goyle may not be smart, but they're not really stupid. If they dared to attack me at Hogwarts, how could they not have prepared an escape route beforehand?
What surprised Xiren even more was the Fiend Curse that followed.
This is not a dark magic that just anyone can learn. Like the Avada Kedavra curse, casting the Fiendfyre curse also requires strong emotions.
The mad desire to destroy everything is the best kindling for the raging fire.
This was found by Siren in a book about Fiendfire spells in the restricted section of the library. It also contained instructions on how to control Fiendfire and how to turn Muggles into vaginas, as well as various other dark magic spells that were explicitly prohibited by the Ministry of Magic. However, Siren could not read this part of the book.
It wasn't because of any magical restrictions, but because the librarian, Mrs. Pins, was standing right next to him, her eyes fixed on Siron's every move.
"You can't flip to the next page!"
The moment Xilun's finger moved, she shouted, "The headmaster only allows you to look at pages 156 and 157 of this book. You can't turn any further, or I'll kick you out!"
"Don't be nervous, Mrs. Pince, of course I know what I should look at." Siren's finger hovered in mid-air, then silently lowered.
Mrs. Pince seemed a little disappointed.
If Xilen doesn't listen to advice, she can easily kick her out.
Honestly—why would Headmaster Dumbledore allow a student to read such a dangerous forbidden book!
Mrs. Pince frowned deeply.
This book, *Acridis's Notebooks on Black Magic*, is considered one of the most dangerous banned books, even in the restricted section.
The cover was tightly bound by two thick iron chains and had always been placed on the bookshelf at the very back of the entire library.
After Celen took out the note, she checked it repeatedly for ten minutes, and then went to the headmaster's office to confirm that it was indeed Dumbledore's signature before reluctantly taking it out and letting Celen look at it for two minutes.
After some back and forth from Dumbledore, the time was extended to ten minutes—though still a bit short, it was a concession made out of respect for Dumbledore.
It's not that it can't last longer, but that it's unnecessary.
Dumbledore never interfered with Mrs. Pomfrey's decisions in the university hospital, and similarly, when it came to the library, he would accept Mrs. Pince's arrangements to the greatest extent possible.
Besides, it's only two pages; ten minutes is enough.
When the time was up, Mrs. Pince immediately took the book from Siron.
"Do you need any help?" Siren asked Mrs. Pins, who was struggling to drag the two chains back onto the lock.
"No, no need!" Mrs. Pince said, snapping the chain back on and carrying the book deeper into the bookshelf.
Silen shrugged and turned to leave the library.
It was already evening, and there wasn't a single person in the empty corridor.
Siren was about to return directly to the Gryffindor Tower when he ran into Snape, who was coming down the stairs.
"What are you doing here!" Snape spoke first, coldly questioning him.
"I just came from the library, Professor," said Sirius. "Principal Dumbledore recommended a book to me, so I went to the library."
"That's for the best." Snape gave Siren a suspicious look. "I hope you haven't forgotten what happened today so quickly. For your own good, you'd better get back to your dorm now."
"Of course, Professor, that's exactly what I'm planning to do," Siren said, then stepped onto a newly turned staircase and was led to the third floor.
Snape stood there watching the whole time. Only when he was sure the stairs stopped on the eighth floor and there were no stairs turning down did he continue down to the first-floor lobby.
At the same time, a black cat nimbly leaped down from the third floor, jumped onto the railing of the second floor, and then jumped onto the arm of a stone statue on the first floor.
From this vantage point, you can just see Snape hurrying into the underground classroom.
Sirius blinked. He was curious why Snape was running to the underground classroom so late at night instead of sleeping, and why he seemed so nervous.
To be honest, at first, Siren didn't think there was anything wrong with Snape. After all, his office was in the underground classroom, so it was perfectly normal for him to be there in that incident.
But if he was just going back to his office, why did he stand there until he was sure he had completely left before he started to move?
That's unnecessary.
Siren couldn't figure it out, so he decided to follow along to see what was going on. Coincidentally, his Animagus was a cat, and he easily jumped down using the stair railing.
Just as Siren had expected, Snape did not return to his office, but went straight to the bottom, which was the Slytherin common room.
But he didn't go into the common lounge; instead, he stopped halfway there.
Because someone was already waiting for him here.
"Draco, why didn't you come to see me!" Snape stopped and asked, "You should have already received the message Greengrass brought you, right?"
"I received it, but I don't think there's anything more to say between us." Malfoy looked up, his eyes coldly fixed on Snape opposite him. "Ever since you decided to help Crabbe and Goyle, we haven't had anything to say to each other, have we?"
"I'll say it again, I didn't help those two idiots Crabbe and Goyle!" Snape growled.
It was clear that he was trying hard to control his emotions.
"Oh, really?" Malfoy's voice rose, a hint of sarcasm playing on his lips.
Do you think I'm a fool?
"Without your help, how could they have brought such dangerous Dark Magic items into Hogwarts? And the place where they set the trap for Ollivander just happened to be your office?"
“I’ve already said, none of this has anything to do with me!” Snape said. “They brought it in themselves. It happened when you first went to Hogsmeade. Someone attacked the Aurors who were hiding there, and they took advantage of the chaos to bring it into the school.”
"Ha, say what you will," Malfoy scoffed. "How do you explain the trap? Would those two idiots have left something on your office door without your permission? Don't tell me you knew nothing about it!"
"I really know nothing—" Snape said irritably. "If you're not completely stupid, you should know that I was at Hogsmeade Station, looking for Death Eaters who might be hiding there, not at the school at all!"
