Chapter 710 Dumbledore's Weakness
Dumbledore arrived faster than expected; less than ten minutes later, he pushed open the door and walked in.
"I received a message from Everard saying there had been an attack at the school," Dumbledore said to a portrait on the wall. "Thank you, Everard."
A sallow-faced wizard with short black bangs opened his eyes and nodded.
"Professor, it's Crabbe and Goyle!" Harry eagerly stepped forward and repeated what he had just said.
Throughout this process, Dumbledore remained calm until Harry regretted not catching them immediately, at which point he shook his head and said...
"No, Harry, you were right not to go after them."
Dumbledore said softly, "If what you're saying is true, they must have been terrified. They tried to kill their classmate with dark magic items, and when that failed, they used the absolutely forbidden Fiendfyre spell."
"They had completely gone mad at that point and would have used any means necessary to deal with anyone who tried to stop them from escaping."
"At that time, not only you, but everyone around you will be in danger—you cannot extinguish the raging fire."
"Fiendfyre?" Harry frowned. "Professor McGonagall mentioned it too. What is it?"
"A kind of dark magic, and one of the most dangerous and terrifying," Dumbledore said. "This magical fire consumes everything and cannot be extinguished by ordinary means."
Cannot be extinguished?
Wait, wasn't the raging fire in the underground classroom extinguished?
Harry thought to himself, puzzled.
"Professor," Sirren stepped forward and asked, "Have Crabbe and Goyle left Hogwarts yet?"
"I think so," Dumbledore said. "I just went to the underground classrooms, and someone saw Crabbe and Goyle leave the castle and run towards the school gates before you came out."
"I've sent people to chase them, but the chances of catching them are slim. Whether it's the door key or the Knight Bus, they can get them out of here quickly."
"It's okay, as long as we know who did it," Celen said.
This attack also taught him a lesson.
In fact, Siren had always known that Crabbe and Goyle had a secret plan, but he had never paid much attention to it.
Both he and Harry focused most of their attention on Malfoy, only occasionally glancing at his two henchmen while observing Malfoy.
I never expected them to have such a big surprise before the holiday.
If Silvermane hadn't been so sensitive to dark magic, perhaps Siron would have already fallen into their trap when he knocked on the door.
Any dark magic item that could make Professor McGonagall so nervous must be very dangerous.
"By the way, how exactly did they get that thing into the school?" Xiren thought of another question.
"Filch carries that instrument that can detect dark magic at the castle gate every day. How did they manage to bring that thing in?"
"If I'm not mistaken—" Dumbledore said after a moment of silence, "Do you remember your first trip to Hogsmeade?"
"Of course I remember," Ron said. "The Death Eaters also attacked that day—"
He paused suddenly, a look of realization crossing his face.
"Yes, it must have been that attack," Dumbledore said. "Many people were terrified and ran back to the castle in a panic. Filch didn't have time to check what they were carrying."
Dumbledore reached out and grabbed a small black skull necklace—still through the Bubble Head Charm, of course.
"The Chain of Corruption is a dark magic artifact made from the fangs of a Peruvian venomous dragon and human skulls. It is extremely dangerous; any Muggle who touches it will die. Even a powerful wizard will immediately lose the ability to fight back if he accidentally touches it."
"Crawb and Goyle must have brought this thing back to Hogwarts around that time."
Ron muttered something under his breath, which Siron didn't hear clearly, but judging from his expression, it seemed like he was cursing.
"Were they planning this from then on?" Siren asked.
"Maybe, maybe not," Dumbledore said, "but there's no denying that they've considered killing you more than once, they just haven't found the right opportunity. Hogwarts' decision to give you an early holiday forced them to act."
"It was my carelessness," Siren said.
Upon closer examination, Crabbe and Goyle's plan actually had many flaws. For example, why would Snape suddenly call Cyren to his office, especially right before the holidays? Even Harry noticed something was amiss immediately.
But Xilun was prejudiced and didn't think that much about it.
"No, it was my oversight," Dumbledore said earnestly. "I should have realized sooner that they would exploit the students—"
You may not know this, but I've spotted Death Eaters near Hogsmeade more than once. But I stubbornly refuse to believe that students are helping them.
"Sirlen, I hope you can forgive me," Dumbledore said. "If I had thought of this sooner and gone to see those students who were close to the Death Eaters, perhaps I could have discovered their plans sooner."
That's what they say, but Siren knew very well that Dumbledore would never suspect a student unless there was concrete evidence—which was probably his biggest weakness.
"Alright," said Siron, "then as compensation, could you give me the Sorting Hat?"
Dumbledore paused for a moment, mainly because he hadn't expected the Sorting Hat to come up in the conversation, but he still thought about it seriously.
"I'm sorry, Siron, the Sorting Hat doesn't belong to me, I can't make that decision," he said. "But I'm willing to help you find Crabbe and Goyle."
"It's okay, I can do it myself," Siren said.
Crabbe and Goyle had given him such a big surprise, he definitely wanted to repay them. Besides, he had to do it himself to show his sincerity.
"Oh, Professor, Malfoy, he must have been involved too!" Suddenly, Harry exclaimed, "Malfoy didn't have time to escape. We can catch him; he definitely knows where Crabbe and Goyle went!"
"Oh, are you sure?" Dumbledore asked.
"Of course, everyone knows that Crabbe and Goyle are Malfoy's henchmen."
“But Harry,” Dumbledore said, “as far as I know, they parted ways this year, and many people have seen them arguing in the common room more than once, and almost coming to blows.”
"It's all an act, to clear himself of suspicion," Harry insisted. "We can use Truth Potion, that's right, Malfoy will definitely tell the truth then."
"Harry, it's illegal to use Veritaserum without authorization," Dumbledore said. "And we have no evidence to suggest that Draco Malfoy is involved."
Harry wanted to hold on a little longer, but Hermione kicked him hard and shook her head slightly as he turned to look at her.
"Okay," Harry said after a moment of silence, "I understand."
